Dennis Moore

Nickname: Putt
Title: Director of Physical Education and Integrated Health

Dennis “Putt” Moore has served as a staff member for the Department of Athletics at Finger Lakes Community College since 1972. Just shy of entering his 40th year at FLCC, Moore currently serves as the primary Chair for the Department of Physical Education and Integrated Health Care. He is responsible for managing the organizational, planning, marketing, and budgeting aspect of the department on a daily basis.

Moore is the original founder of the athletics program at FLCC (formally known as Community College of the Finger Lakes from 1967-1991). The inception of the athletics program took effect in 1972. He originally began his career at FLCC in 1972 as a professor in the Department of Physical Education. Prior to accepting this position at the college, Moore taught and coached at both Victor and Red Jacket High School. He transpired his career at FLCC into one of a legendary status. Moore served as the first Director of Athletics in school history, reigning the position from 1991-2006. He was voted Region III Athletic Director of the Year in 2005-06. Moore served as the head men’s basketball coach at FLCC for 18 years (and served as an assistant for an additional 5 years). He compiled an overall record of 251-104 during his years as a member of the coaching staff on the basketball team, all while claiming a pair of championship titles as well as Coach of the Year honors (twice). Moore became the first coach to be inducted into the FLCC Athletic Hall of Fame. Aside from being an administrator, professor, and coach, he has also   developed and enhanced Physical Education programs, courses, and facilities at FLCC. In 1995, Moore designed and developed an Associate in Science degree program in Physical Education Studies.

Moore was one of the original founders of the Mid-State Athletic Conference. He was also a previous member of the State Board of Directors for the Mid-State Athletic Association as well as the National Junior College Athletic Association (Region III). Moore was a 1993 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award as well as the 1998 beneficiary of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Recently, he was granted the 2011 Exceptional Service Award. In honor of his hard work and devoted dedication to FLCC, the college proudly named the basketball court in the gymnasium (at the main campus) “Putt” Moore court in January of 2011.

Moore is a graduate of Ithaca College, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1968. He also holds a Master’s degree in Physical Education from Syracuse University as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport. Moore is a consistent and vocal supporter of all alumni activities and initiatives at FLCC. He is instrumentally noted for creating the Distinguished Alumni Awards Program at the college. Moore is an active volunteer, presently serving as a Board of Directors member for the Canandaigua Federal Credit Union. He currently resides in Canandaigua, NY with his wife Catherine. The couple has one son named Grady.
