DRYDEN, NY. -- The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers (12-24) swept a road doubleheader with the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers this afternoon, 13-11 (game one, 8 innings) and 6-2 (game two).
The Lakers earned both victories in different fashions. They took the opener in an 8-inning battle with the Panthers by outslugging them with their bats. Finger Lakes concluded the sweep by outpitching Tompkins in the nightcap as Lakers starting pitcher Stephen Lewis (Pittsford, NY) worked his magic on the mound by hurling a solid complete game performance.
Game One Summary -- Tied 10-10 in extra frames, Lakers first baseman Justin Stowell (Horseheads, NY) rapped a 3-run homer in the top of the eighth to give Finger Lakes a 13-10 cushion heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Panthers were only able to muster up just one run in the bottom of the eighth before falling 13-11. Finger Lakes 13-run outburst came with 15 hits.
Lakers Game One Individual Highlights -- Stowell's home run came with a 3 for 5 day from the plate. Falling just a triple shy of recording a cycle, he added 6 RBIs and a pair of runs scored in what was one of his best offensive performances ever in a Finger Lakes uniform.
Eddie Tagliareni (Mexico, NY) and Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY) each contributed 3 hits apiece. To go along with his trio of hits, Tagliareni produced 3 RBIs with 3 runs scored. Mitaynes, like Tagliareni, also crossed the plate three times.
Corey Cowen (West Edmeston, NY) added 2 hits and 2 RBIs from the dish in the win.
Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY) earned the victory out of the bullpen. He tossed 2 1/3 innings worth of 3-hit ball. Stackhouse allowed just one earned run on 2 strikeouts. In addition to his solid stint out of the pen, the freshman didn't allow a single a walk.
Game Two Summary -- Lewis controlled the tempo of the game with his arm by allowing just 5 base runners. The Lakers bats executed plenty of hitting behind Lewis's gem. They finished the game with 11 hits as a team.
Lakers Game Two Individual Highlights -- Lewis finished the game with 7 strikeouts against no walks while allowing just one earned run on the hill.
Mitaynes, Cowen, and Dominick Beniamino (Geneva, NY) registered a combined 6 hits in the victory. All three players reached the 2-hit plateau in the nightcap. In addition to his 2 hits, Mitaynes scored a third of his teams' runs by crossing the plate two times.
Chris Fazio (Staten Island, NY) added a duo of RBIs with his stick.
Upcoming Games -- Finger Lakes will return home on Saturday (4/28) for an afternoon doubleheader with the Alfred State College Pioneers. The first pitch of game one is slated to be thrown at 1:00 pm.
