Men’s Basketball – Lakers Look Solid in 74-64 Home Win over Mohawk Valley

CANANDAIGUA – The FLCC Lakers (1-2) came to their home gym last night looking to turn the corner after falling in their first two games of the 2012-13 season. Welcoming a quality team in the Mohawk Valley CC Hawks (2-2) into its territory, FLCC, behind a hot shooting night, delivered a 74-64 victory over the Hawks in front of what would be described as a packed house at Putt Moore Court.

FLCC, with that hot shooting hand, distributed the rock into their net with a shooting percentace of .484% (30-62). Leading the way in the shooting department for the Lakers in the win with a 9-12 effort from the field was freshman Kaleem Edwards. The 6'4" guard's stellar shooting night came with a game-high 18 points. 
 
Last night's game was an exciting one – as both team's played an up-tempo style of basketball for the duration of the 40-minute meeting.
 
The score at intermission read – 35-30 in favor of the hosts. The Lakers would then outscore the Hawks by five points (39-34) yet again in the second half.
 
In terms of similarities, both squads' benches brought close to identical offensive performances to the court. Mohawk's reserves outscored FLCC's by just a hair – 20-19.
 
In terms of giving the ball away, the Hawks committed 12 turnovers in comparison to the Lakers 15.
 
Team statistics aside, FLCC, in the victory, along with the play of Edwards, received double-digit scoring efforts out of a pair of sophomore forwards in Richard De La Cruz and Sean Carbonell.
 
De La Cruz put up his second consecutive game with ten plus points as he provided the Lakers with a 13-point night.
 
Carbonell, sitting one point behind De La Cruz on the scoring charts, came up with a 12-point showing in the matchup – off 5-11 shooting. In addition to his offense, Carbonell pulled down 8 rebounds in 34 minutes worth of playtime.
 
A pair of 6'3" forwards, Josh Brown and Will Arberry, each scored 8 points off of the bench for FLCC. Arberry, in addition to his points, dished out a game-high 4 assists.
 
In the losing effort, the Hawks, like the Lakers, also charted three scorers in double figures – led by Darryl Brown's 15 points.
 
Basil Harley and Dillon Williams added 13-point and 11-point games respectively for Mohawk.
 
The Lakers will return to action this Sunday for a home meeting with Hudson Valley CC. The two teams will tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
