CANANDAIGUA, NY-- The Finger Lakes men's lacrosse team fell to Genesee Community College by a score of 25-3 on Saturday. The Cougars are ranked 6th in the NJCAA. With the lose, Finger Lakes now stands at 8-8 on the season.
The Lakers got off to a slow start, as the Cougars netted 3 goals within the first five minutes of the first period. Genesee continued to dominate the quarter, scoring 6 more goals. The Lakers would trail the Cougars 9-0 following the first quarter.
The Cougars continued control of the game, scoring 5 additional goals over the Lakers. Matt Scharr would get the Lakers back on board, netting a buzzer beater with 0.8 seconds left in the half. Genesee would carry a 14-1 lead going into halftime.
Genesee would add 2 goals within the first six minutes to maintain the lead over Finger Lakes. The Lakers would fight to get back into the game in the third period. Brandon Grace netted two goals in the quarter to help pick up the momentum for the Lakers. Genesee would fight back scoring 2 additional goals. The Cougars would continue the lead going into the fourth quarter with a score of 18-3 over the Lakers.
Genesee would continue their streak netting 7 goals in the fourth period. The Lakers would go on to lose to the Cougars, 25-3.
Matt Scharr had two assists, maintaining his national lead with 62 total. Corey Grace also contributed an assist to help the Lakers score. Finger lakes won 11 of 21 face offs. Jake Sahrle made 8 saves in goal for the Lakers.
The Lakers qualified for the Region III Playoffs and will open the second season on Wednesday. The Lakers will take on the SUNY Delhi Broncos in Delhi, NY. A time has yet to be announced.
