CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Lacrosse team topped the 2013 squad by winning their 12th game of the season in defeating Jefferson Community College 19-7 on Wednesday.
The Lakers 12 wins are against just two losses. Finger Lakes also holds a 7-2 record within the region. Jefferson is winless on the season in eight games. The Lakers will be on the road this Saturday as they face Genesee Community College. The first faceoff in Batavia is set for 1pm.
Cody Richardson led the Lakers with a career-high four goals. Taylor Spike and Matthew Hall each added a hat trick. Hall assisted on four Lakers goals as well for seven total points. Also with seven points was Corey Grace. The sophomore scored on and set up a career-high six goals. Alex Stull and Austin Laine also contributed multi-goal games.
The Lakers got on the board early as Richardson found the back of the net 1:19 into the game. Jefferson responded 14 seconds later to tie the game, but Taylor Spike took the lead right back 17 seconds after that. Richardson added two more goals in the quarter. Stull and Laine also scored and the Lakers had a 6-2 lead after one. The Cannoneers and Lakers alternated goals both early and late in the second quarter, but the margin remained the same as the Lakers carried an 8-2 advantage into the break.
Finger Lakes came out of halftime and took control of the game. They scored three times in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. After a Jefferson goal, Alex Hurd, Hall and Spike all scored to give the Lakers a 14-6 lead after three quarters. The Lakers added insurance goals in the fourth, capped by the first career goal by Nicholas Terwilliger as Finger Lakes recorded their record-breaking 12th win of the season, 19-7.
