Canandaigua, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College lacrosse team battled Herkimer College in a big NJCAA Region III contest on Monday, April 17. The Lakers defeated the Generals in a 15-12 shootout to improve their record to 5-4 on the season.
There was a lot of back and fourth action during Mondays regional contest. The Gererals took the lead early in the first quarter, but the Lakers would answer back off the stick of Zakk Mount just a minute later. Finger Lakes would then score two unanswered goals. Austin Andryshak and Tate Stewart would each score for the Lakers. Andryshak was assisted by Alex Chiara. The Generals answered back with two goals of their own, tying the game at three goals apiece leading into the second quarter.
There was little scoring in the second quarter. The Lakers were outscored just 3-1. Josh Zugnoni scored the lone goal for Finger Lakes. By the end of the half, the Lakers would trail the Generals 6-4. As the third quarter began, the Lakers came out firing. They would score three unanswered goals. Andryshak, Stewart, and Mount each picked up their second goals. Assists came from Stewart, Ethan Bakogiannis, and Andryshak. The Generals again answered back with three goals of their own, regaining the lead 9-7. However, the Lakers would score three more before the end of the quarter to take a 10-9 lead. Stewart recorded his third and fourth goals. He was assisted by Zugnoni and Andryshak. Mount also completed his hat-trick. He was assisted by Stewart.
In the final quarter the Lakers would outscore the Generals 5-3 to remain ahead 15-12 and claim a regional victory. Andryshak added two more goals on the day. He was assisted by Mount and Bakogiannis. Chiara got his first goal of the game while being assisted by Bakogiannis. Bakogiannis picked up the final two goals for the Lakers. He was unassisted in both.
Ethan Lincoln played a complete game in goal for the Lakers, recording 12 saves. Josh Zugnoni had an impressive day at faceoff, winning 20-31. The Lakers will travel to Hudson Valley Community college on Wednesday, April 19 to face-off against the 5-3 Vikings.
