Men’s Soccer – Lakers Grab 2-1 Home Victory over St. John Fisher JV
CANANDAIGUA – Finger Lakes found themselves tangled in yet another 2-1 game yesterday. The Lakers, who previously defeated North Country CC at home this past Sunday (9/30), 2-1, took down St. John Fisher JV on Wednesday by a score of 2-1. Facing a team in the Cardinals yesterday, who came ready to play from the start of the game right through the end of it, the Lakers were dealt a challenge on their own grass.
The game, which was played on a mild October day, would feature no scoring for the first 31 minutes of it – as both teams kept each other's offenses in check with great efforts out of their defenses. Minute 32 would change the empty scoreboard. That is when the Lakers would strike first – from a scoring standpoint. Finding the net at that juncture was defender Clayton Lovelace. The freshman found the net thanks to a Christopher Shea assist.
Leading 1-nil after Lovelace's helper, the score would remain just that heading into intermission. Just 8 minutes after intermission concluded and the second half began, St. John Fisher JV answered FLCC's first goal with a goal of their own – at minute 53. The Cardinals marker, which tied the game at one, would come as a result of a penalty kick.
After the Cardinals helper was had, the Lakers would answer the score with a rapid score of their own – at minute 56. That score, which was granted to Jake Roth, proved to be the game-winner. Roth's goal, which was assisted by Michael Cooper, in hindsight, pushed FLCC's 2012 home record to 6-4-1.
Overall, the Lakers outshot the Cardinals on the afternoon by a mark of 11-6. In between the crossbars in the win for FLCC was Shane Bly. The sophomore, who stands among the Region III leaders in goals against average and save percentage, came up with 5 saves in the contest.
With the loss, St. John Fisher JV fell to 1-2-1 on the season.
The Lakers will hit the road for their next contest, which is slated for Saturday (10/6) when they take on Jamestown CC at 1:00 p.m. On a side note, yesterday's pairing with the Cardinals marked the end of a four-game home stand for Finger Lakes. The Lakers, who have earned each of their six wins at home this season, went 3-1 during that stretch.
