CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Men’s Soccer team lost a tough one to the Corning Community College Red Barons on Saturday 2-1. Despite the outcome, the Lakers put up a tough battle and made the game a nail biter all the way to the end.
The first half looked to be in the Red Baron’s favor at first. The first goal of the game was scored by Red Baron’s Cheick Coulibaly, assisted by Liam Murphy. Corning scored off of a successful corner kick. They had the momentum early on. The Lakers found their rhythm and started to catch up in intensity. The first half ended in Corning only out-shooting FLCC 11-8.
The second half became more exciting once Laker’s Josue Fontanez scored the second goal of the game. Gabriel Mendoza found Fontanez up the field and he shot and found the back of the net. After the Laker’s goal, the game started to get more and more intense. The Lakers were playing great offensively and were giving each other opportunity, after opportunity. Corning then found their way back in the lead after a goal scored by Mbemba Sano assisted by Coulibaly. The Lakers were determined to not let that be the final score. Off of a Red Baron penalty, Noah Fisher had the opportunity to take a penalty kick and chose to take a direct shot. Fisher kicked a great ball that just hit the crossbar and bounced out. The Laker’s had corner kick opportunities toward the end of the game but just could not find a way to score again. It was a hard fought, and tough loss.
Game leaders for the Lakers were Fontanez with one goal and 5 shots, Mendoza with one assist, and goal keeper Brayden Kane with 7 saves.
The Lakers look for redemption next against the Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves, Wednesday, October 4th at 3:00pm. They will be playing at home. The Lakers will look to improve their record to 6-7.
