Track and Field – Finger Lakes Posts Fourth Place Finish At Alfred State

ALFRED, NY. – The Finger Lakes Community College men and women's track and field teams combined for a fourth place finish in their first meet (held at Alfred State College) of the 2012 season this afternoon. In this meet, Finger Lakes matched up against the likes of Alfred State, Alfred University, and Rochester Institute of Technology.

The men were highlighted by the record breaking performance of Joseph Christian IV (Webster, NY) in today's shot put and the first place finish of Anthony Shuler (Liverpool, NY) in the Triple Jump. Christian broke Finger Lakes men's shot put record with an NJCAA qualifying throw of 13.24 meters (43' 5 ¼"). He finished the afternoon second overall in this category. Shuler's first place finish in the Triple Jump came with an NJCAA qualifying distance of 13.31 meters (43" 8"). The women were highlighted by Julie Brooks (Holley, NY) first place finish in the High Jump. The freshman recorded an NJCAA qualifying height of 1.47 meters (4' 9 ¾"). Brooks also took 4th in the Long Jump and 6th in the Triple Jump.

Along with his stellar performance in the Triple Jump, Shuler took 6th in the 100 Meter Dash, 10th in the 200 Meter Dash, and 5th in the 400 Meter Run. The men also received a solid individual performance out of Joel Vollenweider (Canandaigua, NY). The sophomore took 2nd in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:09.43 and 5th in the 1500 Meter Run with a time of 4:32.19.

On a team note on the men's side, Samuel Beckwith (Ovid, NY), Andrew Superak (Davis, CA), Damien Brown (Liverpool, NY) and Shuler each combined for a 4th place showing in the 4X100 Meter Relay with an overall time of 45.23 seconds (NJCAA qualifying time).

On an individual note on the women's side, Leigha Tilton (Livonia, NY) took second in the High Jump. She and teammate Brooks both finished with the same height in this event. Tilton also took 5th in the 100 Hurdles with an NJCAA qualifying time of 18.75 seconds.

Finger Lakes will participate in its next meet on Saturday (4/7) at Nazareth College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
