Softball – Lady Lakers Drop Pair Of Close Games On Road To Genesee
BATAVIA, NY. – The Finger Lakes Community College Lady Lakers dropped a pair of close games this afternoon to the Genesee Community College Lady Cougars by scores of 18-17 (game one) and 7-5 (game two).
The Lady Lakers squandered leads in both games due to poor defense. Finger Lakes built an 11-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the third inning in game one behind strong hitting out of their lineup, but failed to hold on as the Lady Cougars scored 3 runs in the third and 8 in the fourth to knot the game at 11. The Lady Lakers did manage to regain the lead (17-11) by scoring 3 runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Holding a 17-11 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh, Finger Lakes couldn't hold on as Genesee completed a comeback by scoring 7 runs in the inning to notch the victory.
Despite the tough loss, Finger Lakes came back in game two with a hard fought battle. Trailing 3-0 after the first inning, the Lady Lakers scored 4 runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead. The Lady Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the third via a Lady Laker error. Genesee then capitalized on a pair of Finger Lakes errors in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. The Lady Cougars would go on to add a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings and would hold on for the win.
Game One: Despite the loss, the Lady Lakers offense generated an ample amount of production. Cassidy Smyers (Wellsville, NY) led Finger Lakes in the hitting department with 4 hits. She also scored 4 runs and contributed 1 RBI. Smyers finished the game by going 4 for 4 from the plate. Jeri Baker (Harrisville, NY) and Samantha German (Horseheads, NY) each assembled productive games with their bats for the Lady Lakers in the losing effort. Baker went 3 for 4 with 5 runs scored and 1 RBI. German, playing her first game in two weeks (out with a calf injury), went 3 for 5 with 5 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Emily Essom (Fairport, NY) added a 2 for 4 showing at the plate for Finger Lakes. She also drove in 2 runs and scored once.
Game Two: Baker and German both carried the offense for the Lady Lakers. Baker went a perfect 4 for 4 from the plate with 2 RBI's. German supplied Finger Lakes with a 2 for 4 game in the loss.
The Lady Lakers will host #5 nationally ranked* Tompkins Cortland Community College in their next set of games on Thursday (4/12). The first pitch of game one is scheduled to be thrown at 3:00 pm.
