Softball – Finger Lakes Splits Season Finale In Pair Of Games At Delhi
DELHI, NY. – The Finger Lakes Community College Lady Lakers (8-34, 1-9 MSAC) wrapped up their 2012 season today by splitting an afternoon road doubleheader with the SUNY Delhi Lady Broncos (15-13). Finger Lakes dropped game one 5-2 before taking the nightcap 5-3 in extra innings (8).
Game One Summary – The Lady Lakers built an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but squandered it by spotting the Lady Broncos a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings. Delhi built upon its third inning 4-1 lead in the sixth when it tacked on a run. Finger Lakes added a run of its own in the top half of the seventh before falling 5-2.
Despite the loss, the Lady Lakers hit and pitched effectively. There lineup produced 11 hits. Finger Lakes outhit the Lady Broncos, 11-6. Lady Lakers starting pitcher Shelby Marra (Spencerport, NY) hurled a gem of an outing in defeat by going the distance on the mound.
Lady Lakers Game One Individual Highlights – Marra's 6-inning effort consisted of 3 strikeouts against 2 walks. She allowed 6 hits and just 1 earned run.
Nicole Taylor (Shortsville, NY) led Finger Lakes in the hitting department by registering a perfect 3 for 3 game from the plate.
Jeri Baker (Harrisville, NY) and Samantha German (Horseheads, NY) each added 2 for 4 games from the dish in the opener. They also both accounted for the Lady Lakers 2 runs by crossing the plate one time apiece.
Game Two Summary – Marra came back in the nightcap for her second start of the day on the hill. Odds are she probably didn't think she would end up pitching eight innings. Well, Marra delivered a quality outing by going eight strong, earning the victory for Finger Lakes.
The Lady Lakers established a 3-1 lead after the top of the third inning and sustained it until the bottom half of the seventh. It was in the seventh when Delhi would come back to tie the game at 3. Finger Lakes would then answer the door in the eighth by scoring 2 runs, securing a 5-3 win. The Lady Lakers finished the game with 10 hits.
Lady Lakers Game Two Individual Highlights – Emily Essom (Fairport, NY) led the team in hitting with her 2 for 3 game from the plate. She also added one run scored. Cassidy Smyers (Wellsville, NY) joined Essom in the 2-hit department as well. She went 2 for 4 from the dish.
Kayla Kline (Seneca Falls, NY), Tamara Robertson (Farmington, NY), and German were responsible for a bulk of Finger Lakes run production. Kline produced 3 RBI's and Robertson drove in a pair of runs while German was accountable for 3 runs scored in the win.
Marra's eight-inning stint consisted of 2 strikeouts and no walks against 16 hits and just 3 earned runs.
