Lady Lakers Six-Game Winning Streak Comes to an End
SYRACUSE, NY – Facing the only team that has defeated them in the MSAC this season – the Lady Lakers set out to Syracuse on Saturday, where they took on the nation's eighth ranked team in the Onondaga CC Lady Lazers. In a close-knit game earlier this season – Finger Lakes had its then seven-game winning streak come to an end on the heels of the Lady Lazers.
Entering Saturday with yet another long winning streak attached to their name – the Lady Lakers were seeking to extend a six-game winning streak when they took the court with Onondaga. This time – the end result was no different. Finger Lakes second longest winning streak of the 2012-13 season would come to an end on the heels of the Lady Lazers yet again. Finger Lakes – on an afternoon where Onondaga shot 54 percent from the floor as a team – fell to the Lady Lazers – 89-61.
With the loss – Finger Lakes – who wrapped up its conference schedule with a 10-2 record – will enter this year's MSAC playoffs donning a two seed.
The Lady Lakers – who were led by Casi Strait's game-high 25 points – hung in Saturday's contest in the first half – before falling by double-digit numbers. At the half – Finger Lakes trailed 41-32. Onondaga – who registered four scorers in double figures – turned up the heat offensively in the games' final half. The Lady Lazers – in the final twenty minutes – outscored the Lady Lakers by a count of 48-29.
Strait – who was 10-18 from the floor – has now registered 20 or more points thirteen different times this season. Following her in the scoring column for Finger Lakes was Kelli McCauley. The sophomore – who was 6-12 from the field – registered 19 points on the afternoon. Strait and McCauley – along with their points – accounted for all 4 of Finger Lakes made three-pointers. Both guards finished the day with 2 three's apiece.
Casey Dean and Jordan Smith supplied the Lady Lakers with 8-point and 7-point showings respectively. Smith – in addition to her scoring – pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds.
Julia Pagano – in the losing effort – doled out a team-high 6 assists for Finger Lakes.
For Onondaga – its point-total came with 9 of its players names attached to it. Leading the hosts offensively with 19 points was Kaitlynne Knapp. Her scoring came on a day where she shot 9-13 from the field. Following her with 16 points for the Lady Lazers was Nacirema Mann. The sophomore – like Knapp – also shot the ball at a high percentage as she finished the game 7-10 from the floor. In addition to her offense – Mann registered a game-high 12 rebounds.
Contributing a pair of 13-point performances for Onondaga were Jenna Johnson and Amanda Marcely.
The Lady Lazers recorded the conference win on a day where they received 39 points out of their bench. Onondaga – to go along with its superb shooting – did an excellent job of moving the ball around the gymnasium on Saturday. Handing out 6 assists and 5 assists respectively for the Lady Lazers were Emily Cooper and Marcely.
