Ryan Staychock concluded his first season as head coach of Finger Lakes in 2011-12. Staychock now has four full seasons under his belt with Finger Lakes. Prior to becoming the second coach in the history of the sport at the college, he served as the teams’ assistant coach for the previous three years.
Staychock is a 1996 graduate of Finger Lakes. During his collegiate days at the college, he was a member of the woodsmen team all while earning his Associates in Applied Science (Dual Degree) in Natural Resource Conservation and Natural Resource Conservation Law Enforcement.
After graduating from Finger Lakes, Staychock attended Colorado State University for his undergraduate and graduate studies. In 2001, he received his Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management and in 2006 earned his Master of Science in Forest Sciences.
Staychock’s goal is to continue building upon the successful history of the program.
He is currently employed at Finger Lakes as a Conservation Technician.
Jamie Varney

Jamie Varney concluded her first season as an assistant coach of Finger Lakes in 2011-2012.
Varney was a 1993 graduate of Finger Lakes. During her years (1991-93) at Finger Lakes, she was a member of the Woodsmen team (she was voted team captain during her second year at the college) all while earning her Associates in Applied Science (dual degrees) in Natural Resource Conservation and Conservation Law Enforcement. As a Woodsmen team member, she was part of several championship competition wins, including the Annual Spring Championship, which the team won both years while she attended the college.
After college, Varney competed in Professional Timbersports competitions throughout the states of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New York as well as Canada from 1992-96. During those years, she was a regular competitor at the New York State Open Championship, held in Boonville, NY, where she placed 1st in the Log Roll, Bow Saw, Chainsaw, and Axe Throw several times.
Prior to joining the Finger Lakes staff and after competing for several years outside of the college ranks, Varney served as a volunteer at competitions held at Finger Lakes. She also played in the Women’s Professional Football League momentarily in 2000-01 for the New York Galaxy.
Varney currently owns her own interior painting contracting business called Affordable Interiors.
Steve Varney

Steve Varney concluded his thirty-fourth season as an assistant coach of Finger Lakes in 2011-12. He has assisted with the team since 1978. Prior to joining the team as an assistant coach in 1978, Varney was a fierce competitor on the Finger Lakes Woodsmen squad (he joined the team in 1976 as a college freshman).
He graduated from Finger Lakes in 1977 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Natural Resources Conservation. He is currently employed at Finger Lakes as a carpenter and resides in Naples, NY with his wife Jamie.
