CANANDAIGUA N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Women’s Soccer team triumphed over the 2016 National Champions SUNY Broome Community College, 3-2 in double overtime this afternoon.
The Lakers had a slow start as they trailed 1-0 in the first half after the Hornet’s Jordan McGinnis scored the first goal of the game. In the last few minutes of the first half, FLCC’s Riley Sanger scored the first goal for the Lakers tying the game. The Hornets had possession most of the time but the Lakers made it count when they got the chance to bring the ball to their opponent’s side of the field. Hornet’s McKenna Williams scored their second goal of the game. FLCC’s first year Hannah Ceravolo answered back by scoring her first career goal tying the game once again. Both teams played hard but couldn’t quite finish so they were brought into its first overtime. Both goalies, Jolene Krom (SUNY Broome), and Isabella Prest (FLCC), were walls during the first overtime so the second one began. Two minutes into the second overtime, first year Rylee Mohr, gained possession of the ball and moved it up the field where she found Sanger; Sanger then took a hard shot and found the back of the net for a Laker victory. Sanger was then greeted with a bench clearing hug from her fellow Lakers as they celebrated winning their home opener.
Game leaders were Sanger with two goals, Ceravolo with one, and Mohr with one assist. Goal keeper Isabella Prest had a great first career outing with only 2 goals against, and 21 saves.
The Lakers face off against Harford Community College next on Saturday, August 26 at Monroe Community College.
