FLCC Men and Women Post Solid Performances at Cortland Classic
CORTLAND, NY. – The Finger Lakes CC track and field men and women traveled to Cortland, NY for the Cortland Classic last Friday and Saturday. During the two-day meet, both sides produced outstanding performances. Andre Farrell qualified for the national championships with a seasonal-best time of 11.23 seconds. In addition, he placed 11th in the 100 meter preliminaries and was 6th in the 200 meters with a time of 23.42 seconds.
Farrell, along with Jacob Schenk, Quinton Parrow and Anthony Shuler, qualified for the nationals in the 4X100 meter relay (45.17 seconds). Shuler combined to compete in seven events on Friday and Saturday. His top finish of the weekend came in the triple jump where he took second by hopping to a distance of 12.98 meters.
Furthermore, Shuler turned in solid performances in the long jump (11th, 5.99 meters, seasonal-best), 400 meters (16th, 52.75 seconds), 200 meters (17th, 24.23 seconds), and 100 meters (19th, 11.49 seconds). He also delivered a fourth place showing in the 4X400 meter relay (3:38.93).
Julie Brooks continued to improve in the high jump category as she posted a seasonal-best jump of 1.58 meters for second place overall. Leigha Tilton continued to improve as she posted third in the 100 meter hurdles with a seasonal-best time of 17.05 seconds. In addition, she qualified for the nationals in the 100 meters by finishing 22nd with a time of 13.36 seconds (seasonal-best).
Olivia Schaeber improved in the discus throw and shot put as she finished with seasonal-best throws of 18.23 meters and 7.71 meters, respectively.
Caitlin Drennen qualified for regionals in the 3000 meter steeplechase with her first attempt. In the event, she posted a time of 15:54.
The team of Farrell, Schenk, Gayang Ayol and Shuler – qualified for the regionals with a seasonal-best time of 3:38 in the 4x400 meter relay. Ayol qualified for regionals with his best time of the spring in the 800 meter run. In the run, he raced to a 26th place finish by completing it in a time of 2:04.97.
Nick Pruden continued to improve in the 800 and 1500 meter runs as he finished the events in times of 2:32 and 5:04, respectively.
Next up for the track and field program on the schedule are the regional championships. The men and women will travel to Alfred State College, site of this year's regionals, as part of a two-day event, beginning on Friday, May 3. The event will continue into Saturday, May 4 as well. The time of the championships is TBD.
