Volleyball – Lady Lakers Finish Jefferson CC Tourney With a 1-2 Record

WATERTOWN, NY. – The Lady Lakers completed a series of matches (3) over the weekend on Saturday, 9/1 at the Jefferson CC Tournament (each match was a best-of-three series).

In match one, Finger Lakes (2-2) fell to the hosts Jefferson (member of the Lady Lakers conference) in a set of games – 14-25 and 13-25.

Match two brought the Lady Lakers a different result. After falling to Jefferson, they squared off against another conference foe in Corning CC – where they took the match in back-to-back games – 25-22 and 28-26.

The day's final pairing for the Lady Lakers came with (nationally ranked eighth) Erie CC. This match took 3 games to decide the victorious team. Finger Lakes fell in game one – 16-25 – before taking game two – 25-23. In the deciding game, the Lady Lakers came up short in their quest to take down Erie – falling 11-15.

In the opener against Jefferson, Finger Lakes was highlighted by the play of Conley Gayton (setter), Julianna Marcello (libero), and Jordan Smith (outside hitter) in the losing effort. Gayton compiled a team-high 11 assists and 7 digs in the match. Marcello shared team-high honors with Gayton in the digs department. Smith added 6 kills in the loss.  

In match number two against Corning, Gayton and Smith were strong forces yet again, but this time they were on the winning end of the contest. Gayton registered a team-high 15 assists and 7 digs in the victory while Smith made good on 8 kills (team-high), 6 digs, and 2 aces (team-high). Courtney Bradish (outside hitter/setter) led the Lady Lakers in the digs category with 9. Marcello tacked on 6 digs in the series sweep.

In the final match of the tourney against Erie, Smith and Gayton continued to serve as threats on the court – despite the Lady Laker loss. Smith piled up a team-high 12 kills, 8 digs, and 4 assists (team-high) in the finale. Gayton found herself on the distributing end of 9 assists (team-high) in the defeat. Bradish once again led the team in digs with 9. Marcello, like Smith, contributed 8 digs in the series. Meaghan McCarthy (middle hitter) added 6 kills for the Lady Lakers.

After dropping 2 of 3 matches over the weekend, Finger Lakes will look to rebound tomorrow when they hit the hardwood for their first home match of the 2012 season. The Lady Lakers will take on Onondaga CC at 6:00 p.m.
