Volleyball – Lady Lakers Turn in 2-1 Record at TC3 Pod

DRYDEN, NY. – The Lady Lakers finished up strong in their final regular season matches over the weekend. Traveling to the campus of Tompkins Cortland CC on Saturday (10/13), Finger Lakes took on a host of teams in what was a pod format. Those teams included the likes of Broome CC, Corning CC, and Tompkins Cortland. In the three matches, which were all a best-of-five series, the Lady Lakers (13-20, 5-1 MSAC) turned in a 2-1 record.

In the opening contest, which consisted of FLCC taking on Broome, the Lady Lakers earned a sweep by taking three straight games – 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21. They then followed their meeting with Broome by taking on Corning. In that showing, they came up short in four games – 25-22, 14-25, 17-25, and 17-25. After falling to the Lady Red Barons, the Lady Lakers rebounded by finishing up strong with a sweep of the hosts (Tompkins Cortland) – 25-18, 25-22, and 25-13.

In the opener, FLCC received a rounded effort out of its roster against Broome – led by sizzling sophomore Jordan Smith. Smith was accountable for 14 kills and 10 digs in the win. She was followed by the solid performances of teammates Danielle Joseph, Brittany Havens, Conley Gayton, and Meaghan McCarthy. Joseph turned in 9 kills and landed 4 aces in the three games. Havens added 6 kills of her own while Gayton delivered 31 assists. McCarthy, who recently returned from injury, came up with 4 blocks in the match.

In the loss against Corning, the Lady Lakers received another great showing out of Smith who turned in 10 kills, 6 aces, and 12 digs. Gayton dished out 18 assists while Courtney Bradish (19 digs) and Havens (5 blocks) each contributed with their efforts.

In the finale against Tompkins Cortland, FLCC was headed by Shannon Tozier and her 7 kills. Following her with 6 kills and 5 kills respectively were her teammates – Havens and McCarthy. Gayton (16 assists), Bradish (11 digs), and Smith (9 kills), each chipped in with quality matches for the Lady Lakers.

FLCC, who finished the 2012 regular season with a conference record of 5-1, will play next in the Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament – which is scheduled for this Saturday (10/20) on the confines of Jefferson CC. They will take on Cayuga CC in round one at 11:00 a.m. The Lady Lakers will carry a 2 seed heading into the tournament while the Lady Spartans will enter Saturday wearing a 7 seed. The winner of FLCC and Cayuga will advance to the third round, which will take place at 2:00 p.m. In that contest, either the Lady Lakers or the Lady Spartans will take on the winner of the second round matchup between (#3) Onondaga and (#6) Tompkins Cortland.
