WATERTOWN, NY. – The Lady Lakers traveled up north to the campus of Jefferson CC this past weekend (on Saturday, 10/20) where they competed in the 2012 Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament.
Entering bracket play seeded second, Finger Lakes took on the #7 seeded Cayuga CC Lady Spartans in round one of the tournament. Round one, which was a best-of-three series, favored the Lady Lakers as they took the match in back-to-back sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-13. FLCC came into the weekend supporting a 5-1 conference record while the Lady Spartans arrived to the event carrying a conference record of 0-5.
After their victory over Cayuga, FLCC advanced onto round two (semifinals) of the MSAC Tournament where they took on the third seeded Onondaga CC Lady Lazers. The Lady Lazers, entering the contest with a 4-2 MSAC record, took down the Lady Lakers in three sets in what was a best-of-five series – 20-25, 25-20, and 15-5. The loss ended FLCC's 2012 season.
In the opening match, FLCC was paced by Jordan Smith and her 10 kills. In addition, the standout sophomore also dropped in 9 digs in the win. Meaghan McCarthy (FLCC) chipped in with 4 kills while setter Conley Gayton headed the assists column for the Lady Lakers with her 18 dimes. Brittany Havens (3 aces and 4 digs) and Courtney Bradish (9 digs) each contributed solid showings in both sets.
In the meeting with Onondaga, Smith and Havens each came up with 9 kills – despite falling. Smith didn't stop there. She also delivered 17 digs in the three sets. Gayton contributed in the match by adding 21 assists and 15 digs.
FLCC concluded its 2012 campaign with an overall record of 14-21. A full summary of FLCC's season will be posted on the women's volleyball home page on flccathletics.com later this week.
