Lakers Fall to Jefferson in the MSAC Tournament Finals

The Finger Lakes women's volleyball team entered the Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament seeded second where they matched up against the Corning Community College Red Barons in the semi-final round. The Lakers beat the Red Barons in four sets by scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, and 25-18. They advanced to the finals and faced off against the Jefferson Community College Cannoneers where they fell in three sets by scores of 26-28, 27-29, and 14-25.

During the win against the Red Barons, Ryenn Smith recorded 13 kills and 5 digs. Jessica Carder had a strong offensive performance contributing 8 kills. Meagan Voss rounded out the offense recording 5 kills. Aubrey Davis chipped in 2 kills and 28 assists and Mary Beth Schram had an impressive defensive performance recording 19 digs, which is a season high for her.

The match-up between the Lakers and the Cannoneers made for an exciting finals where both teams battled back and forth throughout. Jefferson jumped out to early leads in all three sets, but the Lakers were able to rally in the first two sets to close the gap. In set two, the Lakers were down 19-24 and relied on an impressive serving performance by Ali Drier to tie the score at 24-24. The Lakers and Cannonneers exchanged points, but the Cannonneers pulled ahead for the set win which gave them the 2-0 advantage going in to the third set. Smith contributed 14 kills and 7 digs. Drier and Carder recorded 8 and 7 kills respectively. Schram had another solid defensive performance with 9 digs and Davis continues to be an offensive threat for the Lakers contributing 4 kills and 21 assists.

The Lakers will continue post season play next weekend at Niagara County Community College at the Region III Volleyball Tournament. The Lakers go into the tournament seeded 7th and are in a pool with Adirondack Community College, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, and Jefferson Community College. The pool play round will be played on Saturday, 11/1. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semi-final round which will be played on Sunday, 11/2.
