Lakers Defeat Broome Behind Balanced Scoring Attack
CANANDAIGUA – If you are a fan of balanced scoring, Putt Moore Court was the place for you to be last night as Finger Lakes displayed a great deal of it.
In a conference matchup between the host Lakers and the Broome CC Hornets on Thursday, Finger Lakes CC came away victorious – 74-46 – behind a balanced scoring effort. All 12 members of its roster reached the scoring column, led by Richard De La Cruz's team-high 14 points.
In the win, the Lakers, as a team, displayed a solid shooting night from the floor. In 40 minutes worth of basketball, they shot 42% from the field and 50% from three-point land where they were 13-26. In addition, they went 9-11 (82%) from the free throw line.
Both half's of the meeting, in terms of scoring, went in favor of Finger Lakes. In the first half, the Lakers outscored the Hornets – 35-26. Post halftime, the Lakers went on to outscore Broome by a margin of 39-20.
Finger Lakes played unselfish basketball in the Mid-State Athletic Conference pairing. It received 36 points out of its starting lineup and an astounding 38 points out of its bench players.
The Lakers did an excellent job of moving the ball around the gymnasium last night. In total, they received at least one assist or more out of 8 of their roster members – led by freshman Kaleem Edwards 5 assists.
De La Cruz's team-high 14 points, which came with a team-high 9 rebounds attached to them, came off 5-12 shooting. Of his 5 baskets, 4 of them were had from beyond the perimeter. Overall, the sophomore went 4-9 from the three-point area.
Joining De La Cruz in the double digit scoring column for Finger Lakes was sophomore forward Sean Carbonell. In 29 minutes worth of playtime, he provided the home team with 11 points in addition to 8 rebounds.
De La Cruz and Carbonell contributed their point totals via starting lineup roles.
Leading the bench in scoring with 9 points for the Lakers was guard Kelvin Munoz. Each of his 9 points came via the three-pointer. He finished the game 3-4 from three.
Supplying Finger Lakes with 8 points off of the pine was Martin Young. His 8 points came with a perfect 4-4 showing from the charity stripe.
In a losing effort, the Hornets received a game-high 21 points out of Lloyd Saunders. Adding a pair of 8-point performances for Broome were Joe Felix and Eddie Stewart. Felix, along with his 8 points, pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Lakers, with ten more games remaining on their 2012-13 conference schedule, will take on another MSAC opponent in their next game, which is scheduled for tomorrow when they host Jefferson CC at 3:00 p.m.
