Postseason Preview: Men's and Women's Basketball
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College basketball teams are set to compete in the NJCAA Region III Sub-Regional Round on Tuesday, February 25th, as the women's team hosts Tompkins Cortland Community College at 6 PM, while the men's team travels to face North Country Community College at 5 PM.
The women's team (10-14, 7-7 MSAC) secured the 7th seed and will take on 10th-seeded Tompkins Cortland CC at home. The Lakers split the regular-season series with the Panthers, falling 43-39 on the road before responding with a 68-49 home win. Jazzmyn Lewis (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) has been a defensive standout, leading NJCAA DIII in steals (7.1 SPG) while averaging 11.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Dalayla Alexander (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) has consistently scored 13.6 PPG, 5.5 RPG, and 3.0 APG. Kierra Shaughnessy (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) has been an all-around contributor with 7.5 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and 35.5% shooting, while Robinson (Hallstead, PA./Blue Ridge) has added 8.4 PPG and 4.5 RPG. The Lakers will look to defend their home court and advance to the regional quarterfinal round on Friday, February 28th against #2 SUNY Jefferson at SUNY Jefferson Community College.
On the men's side, Finger Lakes (10-17, 5-9 MSAC) enters the postseason as the 11th seed and will travel to face 6th-seeded North Country CC at 5 PM. In their only matchup this season, the Lakers battled but fell 66-60 at home. Anthony Torres (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva), a First Team All-MSAC selection, has been one of NJCAA DIII's top scorers (21.6 PPG), while sophomores Bruce Wilder Jr. (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport) who averages 13.7 PPG, 5 RPG, 2.3 APG and Jace Brown (Red Creek, N.Y./Red Creek) adds 13.8 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.4 BPG and have both provided key contributions and leadership this season. The Lakers will aim to flip the script in a tough road test and earn a trip to the regional quarterfinal this Friday, February 28th at Herkimer College against #3 Genesee Community College.
Both matchups take place tomorrow, February 25th, with the women tipping off at 6 PM at home and the men at 5 PM on the road.
