Lakers Travel to Play at Alfred State College on Wednesday

By Matt Troll

CANANDAIGUA – The Lakers, coming off of three wins in a row over the likes of Mohawk Valley CC, Niagara County CC, and Tompkins Cortland CC respectively, will travel to Alfred, NY tomorrow where they will take on the Pioneers of Alfred State College beginning at 4 pm. Finger Lakes, in its three latest contests, have beaten the aforementioned teams in respective order by the scores of 23-3 (on Mar. 26 at FLCC), 17-4 (on Mar. 30 at FLCC), and 19-5 (on Apr. 1 at TC3). The Lakers will enter Wednesday with a 5-6 record, while the Pioneers will come into play supporting a 2-4 record.

The Lakers offense and defense have both been playing lights out lacrosse lately. Leading the team in scoring this season is sophomore Jack Timerson. The attackman, currently the nation's leading goal scorer, has registered 43 helpers in 11 games in 2013. During Finger Lakes three-game win streak, Timerson has posted 18 goals and 7 assists to lead the offense. In addition, the Newark, NY native is second in the nation in points with 58. Timerson, attempting 76 shots thus far this season with his stick, has converted 57 percent of them into scores.

Timerson, over the 3-0 stretch, has been joined by a talented cast of streaking players on offense in the scoring column. Robert Pelkey, also a sophomore on the attack, has been putting together a solid second year in a Lakers uniform. Scoring 13 goals while delivering eight assists over his last three games, Pelkey, on the season, has accrued 31 goals and 13 assists in 11 games. His goal and point (44) totals rank fourth and eighth in the nation respectively.

Finger Lakes, on top of the play of Timerson and Pelkey, have seen great efforts from sophomore's Parker Weeks and Albert Thompson on the offensive side of the ball this spring. Weeks, currently tied for fourth in the nation in assists (22) with Harford CC's Ricky DeMicco and Genesee CC's Christian Reiller, has been the team's top passer all season long. His pristine passing abilities have helped set up 14 Laker goals during Finger Lakes current three-game win streak. Weeks 22 assists have been doled out over a span of 8 games this season.

Thompson, who has recorded five goals and four assists during the win streak, has been a stable force on offense in his second year with the team. The 6-foot-1-inch midfielder, in 11 games played, has quietly registered 14 goals and 13 assists.

On top of the play of sophomore's Timerson, Pelkey, Weeks, and Thompson, Finger Lakes has seen an immergence in the level of play of freshman Joshua Spence. The midfielder, in the games against Mohawk Valley, Niagara County, and TC3, registered seven goals and an assist.

Finger Lakes offense has been balanced with a great defense. Only allowing just four goals per game during the 3-0 streak, the Lakers D has been shutting down opposing offenses. The three-headed goaltending mix of John Perrucci, Matthew Ebanez, and Nathan Gardner, has been a lethal combination in game action. Perrucci, the nation's current saves (158) leader, has served as the starting goaltender in net all season long. Filing away three victories under his name as the starting goalie against Mohawk Valley, Niagara County, and TC3, Perrucci's excellent play has been backed by the efforts of Ebanez and Gardner. Both Ebanez and Gardner, during the 3-0 run, provided the team with strong performances in backup roles.
