By Alex Pagliano
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. -- The Finger Lakes Community College men's lacrosse team used an 11-0 run to notch their fifth consecutive victory on Saturday, defeating Hudson Valley Community College at home 18-8. The five consecutive wins match a program high, previously set back between Apr. 9 – 17, 2011.
Sophomore Jack Timerson continued his marvelous season, posting nine points on seven goals and two assists. Timerson leads the nation in goals with 55, and sits just one goal behind the college's all-time mark for goals scored in an individual season set by Joshua Taylor in 2012 (56). The Newark, N.Y. native also ranks second within the NJCAA with 75 points, a mark that is only five points shy of the college's all-time record for points contributed in an individual season set by Andy Campos in 2010 (80).
Sophomores Parker Weeks and Robert Pelkey added seven points and six points respectively. For Weeks, his four assists move him into a tie for second amongst all NJCAA participants in assists (33). For Pelkey, his four goals and two assists moved him into third amongst fellow NJCAA participants in goals (42) and sixth in points (58).
For the fifth consecutive game, the Lakers (7-6) scored first to start the opening quarter. Pelkey took a Timerson feed at 12:29 to give the Lakers an early one-goal advantage. Timerson would then take matters into his own hands, scoring the game's next goal at 12:07. Hudson Valley Community College would soon halt the Lakers' momentum, as sophomore Paul Bennett scored to put the game within one. Freshman Bryce Sinisgalli would score the frame's final two goals, giving the Vikings a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
From there, the Lakers would exert their offensive will. Brandon Grace and Daniel Johnson would go a perfect 9-of-9 at the faceoff X within the second quarter. The nine wins would set up nine unanswered goals, as Timerson would post a hat trick while Weeks and Pelkey each contributed two goals. The Lakers received goals from Joshua Spence and Albert Thompson to close out the frame.
The string of unanswered goals would not cease at the half. Timerson and Weeks would score to extend the run to 11 goals. After being held scoreless for 26:07, the Vikings responded with two of the next three goals to enter the fourth quarter facing a 14-5 deficit.
Any attempt of a Hudson Valley Community College comeback was quashed by three consecutive Laker goals to start the fourth quarter. Grace recorded his third goal of the year, while Timerson added another two goals. The Vikings would strike again on the man-up opportunity at 7:20, as Erik Halek would convert on a feed from Paul Bennett. The man-up goal marked only the third time in the last 44 attempts that the Lakers have allowed a successful man-up opportunity. Hudson Valley Community College would proceed to score the game's next two goals, but after a late Pelkey goal, their effort fell short, 18-8.
The Lakers will look to record their record-breaking sixth consecutive victory on Wednesday, as they travel to Rochester, N.Y. for a 3p.m. faceoff with No. 5 Monroe Community College.
