CANANDAIGUA -- The Lakers (0-0-1) kicked off their 2012 season on Saturday (8/25) with a 1-1 double overtime draw at home against #6 nationally ranked Howard CC. On a warm and sunny afternoon, Finger Lakes CC scraped and clawed on offense and defense by exhibiting a solid all-around effort against what was a potent team in the Dragons.
Scoring the loan Laker goal in the tie was that of freshman forward Sahbaz Sabanovic. The first-year player out of East Rochester, NY, demonstrated how great of an athlete he is by providing Finger Lakes with a high level of tenacity throughout the length of the season opener. Sabanovic did an excellent job of continuously attacking the net for the duration of the game thanks to his phenomenal shooting abilities.
The Lakers showed an immense amount of passion and hunger for wanting to steal their first contest of the season against the nation's 6th ranked team. Given their drive throughout the game and into both OT's, Finger Lakes head coach Brent Conley was quoted as saying, "I strongly believed that if given one more OT, we would have claimed a victory." Conley made this statement with the full notion that his team showed no quit on the pitch on Saturday.
