Men’s Soccer – Lakers Shutout Niagara County at Home, 2-Nil
CANANDAIGUA – The Lakers entered yesterday's late afternoon matchup with Niagara County CC seeking to put an end to a 3-game losing streak.
Entering game time at 4:00 p.m. – Finger Lakes knew they were facing a very determined and well-coached team in the visiting Thunderwolves. Despite the talented crew in Niagara, the Lakers (4-8-1, 1-2 MSAC) came out in the beginning of the contest boasting a great deal of energy – so much energy – that they would score the games only goals in the first 6 minutes of the contest.
Finger Lakes, who took the victory, 2-nil, notched a pair of markers in back-to-back minutes in those first 6 minutes of the game. On a rather breezy and chilly fall day on Thursday, the Lakers would shield the wind for about 120 seconds by firing two shots into Niagara's net at minutes 5 and 6. The first helper came off of the shooting foot of freshman Michael Cooper. Brandon Zaov assisted it. Literally just 60 seconds later, Zaov was on the passing end of another goal. This time, he found Jesus Diaz for the games remaining goal.
After Diaz found the back of the net, Niagara and Finger Lakes would go on to play a scoreless game. It seemed like a tale of two different games after that sixth minute.
On the winning end in between the crossbars for the Lakers was Shane Bly. The sophomore keeper earned his 4th shutout of 2012 in the 90-minute match by collecting 3 saves.
The Thunderwolves, who previously posted a pair of back-to-back 2-2 draws in games against Jefferson CC and Alfred State College, played a solid game for the duration of both half's yesterday. With the loss, they are now 2-6-2 on the season. They will play next on Thursday, Oct. 4 against Broome CC at home.
Finger Lakes will take the field again tomorrow for a home game where they will face-off against SUNY Delhi at 1:00 p.m.
