Men’s Soccer – Lakers Come Up Short at Home to Delhi, 2-1
CANANDAIGUA – Finger Lakes, taking on SUNY Delhi at home yesterday, played the visiting Broncos to a scoreless tie for the first 71 minutes of the afternoon matchup. Saturday's pairing had the feel of a postseason game. Both teams mastered great defensive efforts in what turned out to be a 2-1 Delhi victory. All three helpers that were had in the contest came in a span of 16 minutes in the second half.
Delhi altered the silent scoreboard at minute 72 when they found the netting in the back of Finger Lakes goal via a penalty kick. The Lakers then answered the Broncos goal with a score of their own via a penalty kick – at minute 85. The individual responsible for making good on it was keeper Shane Bly. The goal was his first of 2012.
Knotted at one with 5 minutes remaining in regulation, it wasn't long – only 3 minutes after Bly's goal – when Delhi would take the game into its own hands. At minute 88, the Broncos notched the games final score – securing the 2-1 road win.
In the loss, Bly added a quality performance in the crease to go along with his goal. The sophomore, who played the entire game in net, accumulated 3 saves for the hosts.
Finger Lakes and Delhi played an evenly matched game throughout half's one and two. Both teams did an excellent job of containing one's zone for a majority of the 90-minute meeting. The Lakers and Broncos both capitalized on penalty kicks, but it would be Delhi who would seize the victory – as they were able to squeak in the deciding goal with time ticking away at the conclusion of the second half.
With the win, Delhi now sits at 3-8 on the season. They will play next on Tuesday (10/2) at Fulton-Montgomery CC.
Finger Lakes returned to the field today where they took down North Country CC at home – 2-1. The win improved the Lakers 2012 record to 5-9-1 (1-2 MSAC).
