FLCC to Offer Pair of Winter Softball Clinic Sessions on December 29th
CANANDAIGUA – Do you miss the sounds of a softball being thrown, hit, or caught? Are you a diehard softball fanatic who shares as much passion for the game as the Finger Lakes CC softball coaching staff and roster does? Do you look at your calendar only wishing it was spring again so the sport could be relieved into the air?
Well – you can put a short halt on wishing the winter months away later this month by joining the Finger Lakes CC softball staff/roster in a pair of pitching/catching (session one) and hitting/fielding (session two) clinic sessions. These sessions, which are both scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 29th under the lights in the gymnasium at FLCC's main campus (located in Canandaigua), will run from 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. respectively. (Note: for anyone who is interested in attending either of these clinic sessions, you must be between the ages of 10-17)
Camp staff members Pat Clark (head FLCC softball coach), Kristen Schuth and Sam Pierce – both of whom are assistant FLCC softball coaches – along with the entire current Lady Lakers softball roster – will all be on hand to teach this two-part clinic.
Hitting in the leadoff spot in session number one will be the pitching and catching clinic. For three full hours, you the camper will be taught the specific aspects of what it takes to be a dominate pitcher and catcher at any level. Here's what to expect in this early morning/early afternoon teaching session.
Session One: For the participant interested in discovering what it takes to be an effective pitcher, Clark, Schuth, Pierce, and FLCC players, will provide in-depth instructions on what one needs to do to be a forceful figure on the mound. They will cover ways in which you can improve your arsenal of pitches. Pitches that will be covered include the following – fastball, change-up, curve, drop, screw, and rise. A lesson on how to increase velocity will also be included. Furthermore, drills will be instituted to enhance one's movement to the ball. Lastly, the MENTAL aspect of pitching will be thoroughly discussed.
The final part of session one will cover the necessary facets of what it takes to be a quality catcher. This instruction process will focus on what one needs to do when catching and framing pitches. The various pitches that will be analyzed include the fastball, change-up, curve, drop, screw, and rise. The staff will educate ways in which one can call their own game in an effective manner. When attending this final part of the first session, the attendee will be dealt with drills that will assist in increasing their throw downs and blocking. In conclusion, the mental part of catching will be strongly discussed.
Hitting in the two hole will be the hitting and fielding clinic session. For two full hours in the early to mid-afternoon session, each individual on hand can expect to be shown what it takes to become a consistent hitter and fielder.
Session two: Hitters will be taught the nuances of the swing and will receive the key to what it takes to hit an assortment of pitches. A videotaped swing critique will be included in this portion of the afternoon session. Camp coaches will discuss what one needs to do to further increase the power of their swing and in addition they will teach the camper ways to establish superb pitch selection when standing in the box. Last but not least, this section will include what a hitter needs to do in order to develop the mental aspect of striking a softball when they have a bat in their hands.
The clinic will close with a tutorial on fielding. In this portion of the second session, participants will be given forehand and backhand instruction. Situational fielding will be included. Individuals will receive analysis on bunt, infield, and outfield coverage. Learning how to become a better all-around fielder will be an integral element of this part of the clinic. Proper throwing mechanics will be discussed in length. Moreover, the layout of what goes into being a mentally prepared fielder will be examined.
