Track and Field - Finger Lakes Competes In Nationals At Alfred State

ALFRED, NY. -- The Finger Lakes Community College (CC) men's and women's track and field team competed in the 2012 NJCAA Division III National Championships last week. This year's competition took place on the campus of Alfred State College, running from Thursday, May 3 through Saturday, May 5. A total of 21 teams, which included in-state and out-of-state institutions, participated in the 3-day meet. Of the 21 participating teams, Finger Lakes was joined by neighboring institutions Alfred State (host site), Herkimer County CC, Mohawk Valley CC, as well as SUNY Delhi in this year's competition.  

The Finger Lakes women's division placed 16th overall. The Finger Lakes men's division placed 19th overall. All 21 institutions participated in the women's division; whereas just 20 of the 21 participated in the men's division. Each participating institution's overall divisional score was based upon the results of how they finished in totality for 22 events. Finger Lakes Individual and Team Performances

Day One Individual -- The day was highlighted by All-Region Team selectee Samuel Beckwith's (Ovid, NY) 4th place showing in the Men's Long Jump. His top five finish came with a jump of 6.44 meters (m) (21'1 ½"). Nicholas Jasikoff  (Ovid, NY) tossed a new school record in the Men's Hammer Throw with a throw of 36.95 m (121' 3"). He finished the event in 14th place.

The women were led by Julie Brooks (Holley, NY) and her 14th place finish in the Long Jump, where she jumped to a distance of 4.42 m (14' 6"). Jessica Kaiser (Ovid, NY) added a 15th place showing in the Long Jump for the women with a distance of 4.30 m (14' 1 ¼").

Day One Team -- The Men's 4X100 Meter Relay, which consists of Beckwith, Anthony Shuler (Liverpool, NY), Andrew Superak (Davis, CA), and Jeremy Westerfield (Penn Yan, NY), placed 10th with a time of 45.08 seconds (s).

The Women's 4X100 Meter Relay, which is made up of Brooks, Kaiser, Leigha Tilton (Livonia, NY), and Kathryn Zebrowski (Dundee, NY), placed 11th with a time of 53.77 s.

Day Two Individual -- Shuler turned in the top performance of the day out of either division for Finger Lakes by placing 5th in the Men's Triple Jump. He finished the event with a distance of 13.28 m (43' 7").

Brooks was in line for the next best showing. She placed 8th in the Women's Triple Jump by jumping to a season best distance of 10.01 m (32' 10 ¼").

Jacob Schenk (Shortsville, NY) recorded the third best individual performance of the afternoon by placing 10th in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles. He finished the event with a time of 17.39 s.

In the Women's 100 Meter Dash, Tilton took 13th place with a time of 13.69 s.

In the Men's 800 Meter Run, Joel Vollenweider (Canandaigua, NY) raced to a 13th place finish by placing a time of 2:00.39 (new school record).

Beckwith took 15th in the Men's 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.60 s.

Shuler added to his strong showing in the Triple Jump by placing 16th in the Men's 400 Meter Run. He finished the event with a time of 51.57 s.

Day Three Individual -- Brooks conquered the top finish of the day out of either division for Finger Lakes with her 3rd place showing in the Women's High Jump, where she leaped to a distance of 1.55 m (5' 1"). Tilton joined Brooks in the Women's High Jump by placing 5th with the same distance.  Tilton added a 6th place finish in the Women's 100 Meter Hurdles. She finished the event with a season best time of 17.26 s. Brooks tacked on an 8th place performance in the Women's Triple Jump with a season best time of 10.01 m (32' 10").

The men were highlighted by the 8th place finish of Joey Christian IV (Webster, NY) in the Shot Put. He finished the event with a season best throw of 13.25 m (43' 5 ½").
