FLCC Track & Field Competes in Regionals at Alfred State College
ALFRED, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College track and field team participated in the 2013 NJCAA Region III Championships on May 3 and 4 on the campus of Alfred State College. The men and women, who ran in unseasonably warm temperatures on both days, were led by Gayang Ayol's first place showing in the men's 800 Meter Run. The sophomore, in the run, raced to the top spot by turning in a time of 2:02.07. Ayol's showing in the 800 Meter Run, which earned him First Team All-Region honors, was backed by several solid performances on both the men and women's sides.
Sophomore Julie Brooks performed well in the women's long, triple, and high jumps. She placed second in both the long and triple jump categories as she leaped to distances of 4.66 meters and 10.05 meters, respectively. Her pair of second place showings earned her Second Team All-Region honors. Brooks capped off her quality weekend at the regionals by finishing third in the high jump where she leaped to a distance of 1.55 meters.
Leigha Tilton backed Brooks' performance with a quality weekend of her own. The sophomore came in second in the women's high jump (1.55 meters) and in addition placed third in the 100 Meter Dash (13.40 seconds) and 100 Meter Hurdles (17.37 seconds). Tilton's finish in the high jump earned her Second Team All-Region honors.
Caitlin Drennen joined Brooks and Tilton on the All-Region squad at Alfred State with her second place display in the women's 3000 Meter Steeplechase. In the event, her time, which read 15:49.93, earned her Second Team honors.
In the men's division, Ayol's display in the 800 Meter Run was followed by Anthony Shuler and his solid performance in the two-day meet. The sophomore placed third, fifth, and sixth in the triple jump (12.96 meters), 400 Meter Dash (52.30 seconds) and long jump (6.08 meters), respectively.
In addition to Ayol's and Shuler's individual outings, the men's side received a third place finish out of Andre Farrell, Jacob Schenk, Ayol and Shuler in the 4X400 Meter Relay. The team of four placed above Mohawk Valley Community College and Herkimer County Community College with their time of 3:40.25.
