CANANDAIGUA – The Lady Lakers hosted Corning CC last night in a conference showdown amidst their own hardwood. Finger Lakes didn't disappoint the crowd on sophomore night at Putt Moore Court. They managed to defeat a solid opponent in the Lady Red Barons – 3-1.
Corning took the opening game of the best-of-five series rather decisively – 25-18. The Lady Lakers (6-14, 4-1 MSAC) would answer the Lady Red Barons knock on the door by taking the next three games – 25-20, 25-22, and 25-13.
The win snapped a 3-game losing streak for Finger Lakes. The loss dropped Corning back to the .500 mark – as they are now 9-9 on the season.
For the Lady Lakers, they were led by sophomore Jordan Smith in the contest. She finished the match with 9 kills, 5 aces, and 15 digs.
Setter Conley Gayton poured in 18 assists while Brittany Havens made good on 4 blocks for Finger Lakes. Sierra Graham sat one block behind Havens as she contributed 3 blocks of her own for the Lady Lakers in the home meeting.
Wednesday's pairing of these two teams could easily have gone the distance. Both team's scrapped throughout the match by playing hard set in and set out.
The Lady Red Barons will play next this Saturday (9/29) in a POD event held at Niagara County CC – where they will take on the likes of #8 nationally ranked Niagara County CC (9:00 a.m.), Jamestown CC (11:00 a.m.), and Erie CC (3:00 p.m.).
The Lady Lakers will be back in action on Saturday as well. They will remain at home for a set of matches. In the opener, they will take on SUNY Delhi at 12:30 p.m. They will then follow with a matchup with Mohawk Valley CC at 2:00 p.m.
