Volleyball – Lady Lakers Sweep Broome on Road, Three Sets to None
BINGHAMTON, NY. – The Lady Lakers set out on a trip yesterday to the campus of Broome CC - where they took on the Lady Hornets in a 6:00 p.m. conference contest.
In what was a best-of-five series, Finger Lakes, facing a quality opponent in Broome, knew they had a challenging road match in front of them. The Lady Lakers though, rose to the occasion by playing great volleyball all match long. Filling the court with solid contributions from several different athletes on Wednesday, Finger Lakes (9-16, 5-1 MSAC) earned a sweep of the Lady Hornets by taking them down three sets to none. All three games were relatively close – as Broome put forth a scrappy effort set in and set out. The Lady Lakers took the three sets in the match by a combined ten points. The scores read like this – 25-22, 25-20, and 25-23.
The victory improved Finger Lakes 2012 conference record to 5-1. In their sixth conference matchup of the season, the Lady Lakers received solid production out of six of their players. Sophomore Jordan Smith headed the kills column for Finger Lakes – as she delivered 12 of them in the match. Following right behind her with 11 kills of her own was her teammate – Courtney Bradish.
Setter Conley Gayton dished out 28 assists in the win for FLCC. Brittany Havens and Shannon Tozier poured in 5 aces and 4 aces respectively for the Lady Lakers. Freshman Julianna Marcello added 9 digs in the away meeting for Finger Lakes.
In what was a back-and-forth battle yesterday evening between the two schools, the crowd was not cheated by either side's performance. Both Broome and FLCC consistently played high intense sets - in what turned out to be a great match to watch – despite the outcome being a sweep in favor of the Lady Lakers.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets fell to 6-13 on the season. They will play their next match next Tuesday (10/9) when they are slated to hit the road where they will take on Davis College. Earlier in the 2012 season (on 8/31), Broome defeated Davis on their own court, three sets to one.
Finger Lakes will remain on the road for their next slew of matches as they will now travel to Syracuse, NY to partake in the Onondaga CC Tournament - which is scheduled to be held on the confines of Onondaga CC. The tournament, which will kickoff tomorrow and run through Saturday (10/6), will be a two-day event in total. On Friday, the Lady Lakers will take on Corning CC and Jefferson CC at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively. They will then follow those matches with contests against Cayuga CC and Jamestown CC on Saturday. Those meetings will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively.
