Women’s Basketball – FLCC Registers 77-60 Home Win over Hudson Valley
CANANDAIGUA – The Lady Lakers, in their most recent game, earned a 77-60 home win over Hudson Valley CC on Sunday.
In the win, four FLCC starters reached double figures in scoring – led by Casi Strait's 26 points (game-high).
The play of FLCC's starters yesterday would be defined by most as excellent.
Sophomore guard Kelli McCauley – the Lady Lakers second leading scorer – poured in 15 points for the hosts.
The other two FLCC starters reaching double digits in the scoring column were Jordan Smith and Britany Monpere. Both forwards recorded 10-point afternoons.
The win moved FLCC's record to 2-4.
The victory didn't seem set in stone for the Lady Lakers upon the conclusion of the first half. Heading into the second half with a 35-32 lead, it appeared as if Hudson was going to be hanging around for the duration of the contest.
The hanging around part was not so much the case in the second half – on the behalf of the Lady Vikings.
A talented and well-coached squad, Hudson was stricken by the second half offensive outburst of Strait. The sophomore, who finished the game 11-22 from the field, was a key catalyst in triggering the double-digit victory for the Lady Lakers.
The three point halftime lead ballooned into a seventeen point lead for FLCC late in the second half. In the games' final 20 minutes, the Lady Lakers outscored the Lady Vikings by a margin of 42-28.
Aside from their scoring, Strait, McCauley, Smith, and Monpere, each provided the Lady Lakers with great performances on the defensive end of the hardwood.
Smith registered a team-high 12 rebounds (6 of them were offensive) while Monpere pulled down 10 boards in the win. Combining their rebound and point totals – both players finished the afternoon with double-doubles.
In addition to her game-high 26 points, Strait came up with eight rebounds on Sunday.
McCauley added six assists (game-high) and five steals (game-high) to go along with her 15 points.
The Lady Lakers fifth starter, guard Julia Pagano, chipped in both offensively and defensively with her 7 points, four assists, and four steals.
In a losing effort, Hudson saw three of its starters reach double figures in scoring – led by Raeshelle Frasier's 25 points.
Samantha Tomeck (18 points) and Angelica Smith (10 points) each added double-digit scoring games for the Lady Vikings.
Frasier, in addition to her large number of points, tacked on a game-high 13 rebounds.
Angelica Smith, to go along with her scoring efforts, registered a game-high four blocks.
In terms of an overview of how each team played across the wave of statistical categories that are judged in each game, the category that affected the outcome of the matchup substantially was the turnover column. The Lady Vikings gave the ball away a grand total of 32 times while the Lady Lakers, despite the number not being too low, squandered over the rock 19 times.
Hudson's foul trouble also played a role in its road defeat. In the 40 minutes of competition, they committed 20 personal fouls as opposed to FLCC's 12.
Field-goal percentage favored Hudson by just slightly over a percentage point. The Lady Vikings shot .439% from the field while the Lady Lakers hoisted the rock into Hudson's net at a .424% rate.
In a rematch from earlier in the season, FLCC will play its next game tomorrow when it takes on Herkimer County CC at home. The two teams met in what was the 2012-13 season opener for both sides on 11/1 on Herkimer's court. In that meeting, the Lady Lakers fell to the Lady Generals – 53-50. Tuesday's game will get underway at 5:00 p.m.
