FLCC Guard Casi Strait Named Region III Female Co-Athlete of the Week
CANANDAIGUA – Women's basketball standout shooting guard Casi Strait recently led the Finger Lakes CC Lady Lakers to three consecutive Mid-State Athletic Conference victories. These victories, which consisted of her dropping in a combined 69 points in the scoring column, put Finger Lakes conference record off to a 3-0 start for the 2012-13 season.
The three wins, which came against the likes of Tompkins Cortland CC, Broome CC, and Jefferson CC – couldn't have been fulfilled without her stellar offensive performances. Her play, which consisted of her averaging 23 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game throughout the three-game stretch – provided the NJCAA with a good argument as to why they elected her as a Region III Female Athlete of the Week.
Strait, who is averaging 19.7 points (team-best), 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game (in 15 games played) – shares Region III Female Co-Athlete of the Week honors with Carlin Chruscicki – a standout Mohawk Valley CC indoor track and field athlete.
Strait jump-started her hot play over the duration of these contests in the Lady Lakers first conference meeting of the season. That meeting, which took place at Tompkins Cortland on Tuesday, 1/8 – ended with a 64-49 outcome in favor of FLCC. In the win, she scored a game-high 25 points off 8-15 shooting and was a perfect 2-2 from three-point land. To go along with her scoring, she also contributed 5 rebounds in the road meeting.
In the Lady Lakers following contest, which took place on their own hardwood on Thursday, 1/10 against Broome, Strait registered a game-high 17 points in a 63-40 FLCC win. In addition to her 17 points, she pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds all while doling out 3 assists.
Strait then concluded her solid play with a 27-point (game and season-high) afternoon on Sunday, 1/12. In that game, which consisted of the Lady Lakers hosting Jefferson at Putt Moore Court, she drove FLCC to an 81-64 victory behind an 11-26 shooting effort. Her shooting came with a 4-8 day from three. Strait, furthermore, tallied 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in the home meeting.
Over the three-game span, Strait shot 40% from the field and 58% from three. She currently ranks first in scoring in Region III women's basketball with her 19.7 points per game average.
