Lady Lakers Remain Undefeated in 2013 and in the MSAC with Road Win

CORNING, NY. – The Lady Lakers remain undefeated since the calendar changed to 2013. In their latest contest, which consisted of them taking on the Corning CC Lady Red Barons on the road on Thursday, Finger Lakes improved its conference record in the Mid-State Athletic Conference to 4-0 by notching a 74-48 victory. The win, which signified their fourth in a row (each of which have come inside the conference), improved the Lady Lakers 2012-13 record to 7-9.

Finger Lakes, offensively, was led by the 23-point performance of Casi Strait. The sophomore shooting guard was one of three Lady Lakers who reached double figures in scoring. Casey Dean's 12 points and Britany Monpere's 10 points followed her.

The Lady Red Barons, despite courting just 6 players on their roster last night, received a game-high 27 points out of Marissa Pike.

Finger Lakes established a 37-19 halftime lead behind 16 first half points out of Strait. Corning, not to be outdone, showed great resiliency in the second half. The Lady Lakers, in the second half, would score another 37 points. The Lady Red Barons, in the final 20 minutes, put up a 29 spot.

Turnovers were a huge issue for the hosts. Corning, on the night, turned the ball over 30 times in the 40-minute contest. Finger Lakes, in the MSAC matchup, committed 17 turnovers.  

The Lady Lakers, who shot 40% from the field as a team, were led in the shooting department by Dean's 6-9 effort. Monpere, who also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her 10 points, finished the game 5-11 from the court.

Lady Lakers point guard Julia Pagano registered 7 points and a game-high 5 steals.

Contributing a pair of 6-point performances for Finger Lakes were Jordan Smith and Kelli McCauley. Smith followed Monpere in the rebounding category with 7 boards of her own. Monpere and McCauley paced the Lady Lakers in assists. Both sophomore's each registered 4 assists (tying one another for game-high honors) apiece.  

For Corning, Pike's 27-point showing came on a night where she shot 3-5 from three-point land. The Lady Red Barons, as a unit, shot 39% from three. Finger Lakes, collectively, shot 27% from beyond the arc where it was led by Strait's 2-4 effort. Pike, in addition to her scoring, was 6-8 from the free throw line.

Mollie Peck, Sarah Dickson, and Chelsea Lehman each chipped in with 6 points apiece for Corning. Dickson, to go along with her scoring, pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.

The Lady Lakers will continue their conference play in their next game, which is scheduled for tomorrow when they take on Cayuga CC on the road. Finger Lakes and the Lady Spartans will begin play at 1:00 p.m.
