Lady Lakers Reach Century Mark in Home Win Over Tompkins Cortland
CANANDAIGUA – The Lady Lakers took down the Tompkins Cortland CC Lady Panthers this afternoon in a home conference contest by a score of 100-68. Finger Lakes, with the win, improved its conference record to 6-1. On the season, the Lady Lakers stand at 10-10 overall.
On a day where Finger Lakes hit the century mark on the scoreboard – the Lady Lakers saw six of their players reach double figures in the scoring department. Leading the way for the hosts with a pair of 18-point games were Casi Strait and Kelli McCauley. The other four Lady Lakers who reached double figures consisted of Julia Pagano, Jordan Smith, Alexis Maiorano, and Casey Dean.
Pagano poured in 12 points and handed out a game and season-high 12 assists in 30 minutes on Saturday. Smith and Maiorano each contributed 11 points apiece in the win while Dean registered 10 points in 19 minutes.
Finger Lakes – from the start of tip-off – shot the ball at a high percentage. In the first half – where the Lady Lakers outscored the Lady Panthers – 45-26 – Finger Lakes shot 52% from the floor. The Lady Lakers offense was sparked by the hot shooting hand of McCauley. In the first half, the sophomore guard tallied 14 points. In 16 first half minutes, McCauley was 4-6 from three-point land and was 5-8 from the field.
Smith also served as a key spark to Finger Lakes offense. Each of her 11 points came prior to halftime. The Lady Lakers – after shooting at a high percentage as a team in the first half – continued their solid shooting ways in the second half as well. In the final half of the MSAC meeting, Finger Lakes shot 54% from the court. Over the final 20 minutes of the game, the Lady Lakers outscored the Lady Panthers by a count of 55-42.
Tompkins Cortland – despite falling – registered four double-digit scorers. Becca Holton Tomasdottir's 17 points paced the visitors. Following her with 14-point, 12-point, and 11-point efforts respectively for the Lady Panthers were Meghan Ideman, Nicole Goodwin, and Chelsi Rosa. Chipping in with 7 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Tompkins Cortland was Audrey Kate Ordway.
Finger Lakes notched the victory by playing great team ball. In 40 minutes worth of basketball, it saw each member of its roster reach the scoring column. In addition, the Lady Lakers received one assist or more out of seven of their players.
Finger Lakes – in addition to its list of double-digit scorers – received a pair of 9-point showings out of Britany Monpere and Kelly Broderick. Monpere – to go along with her scoring – pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds all while grabbing a game-high 5 steals.
Finger Lakes not only saw its starting lineup put forth a great effort on Saturday – however – it also saw its bench turn in a valuable one as well. On the afternoon – Maiorano, Dean, Broderick, and Jennifer Guerrier – combined to score 32 bench points for the Lady Lakers.
Finger Lakes – behind 53% shooting for the game – was 11-16 (69%) as a team from beyond the arc. McCauley – after her first half 4-6 display from three – finished the game 4-6 from three and was 7-10 from the hardwood. Supplying the Lady Lakers with 3-3 and 2-2 efforts respectively from the three-point area were Broderick and Pagano.
The Lady Panthers – for the game – shot 37% from the field. Their top shooters of the day were credited to Ideman and Goodwin. Both freshmen finished the contest 4-8 from the floor.
Finger Lakes – in its next game – will travel to Binghamton, NY where it will take on Broome CC next Wednesday (1/30). Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
