Women’s Soccer – Carmona Notches Lone Goal of Opener in a 1-0 FLCC Win

CANANDAIGUA – It looks like Finger Lakes CC (1-0-0) has picked up right where it left off from last season – in the win column.

The Lady Lakers, on what was an overcast day at game time on Tuesday, started out their 2012 season on the winning end of 1-0 home shutout. The victory came against conference foes Onondaga CC. Finger Lakes entered the game ranked 3rd in the nation by the NJCAA thanks to the unprecedented 21-1-1 season it had a year ago.

With a pair of donuts on the scoreboard from both the visiting and home teams at half time, the first half of yesterday's contest was written in stone as a battle of the defenses. Both goalkeepers, Onondaga's and Finger Lakes, did an excellent job of keeping opposing offenses in check. That would all change early on in the latter half of the game.

Just 13 seconds into half number two, the Lady Lakers came out in attack mode. This is when they decided to take the season opener into their own hands.

When the game clock struck 45:13, Lady Lakers sophomore forward Cayli Carmona was busy discovering the net. It was then that she notched the game's only goal.

Carmona, an NJCAA All-American in 2011, peeled her way through Onondaga's D to discover her first goal of the season after Hannah Dalle (defender/forward) made what was a crisp pass to the dazzling second-year player out of Rochester, NY. Dalle, a sophomore returnee from last year's club as well, was no slouch of a player her freshman year. In 2011, she was named First Team All-Region based upon her solid production as a defender.

The 1-nil blanking of Onondaga couldn't have been done by the Lady Lakers without the stellar play of their starting goaltender Kristy Kirkpatrick. The sophomore, who resides in Irondequoit, NY, kept Onondaga at bay on the offensive side of the ball thanks to her outstanding length and quick speed. Kirkpatrick used these assets to amass a total of 5 saves in the victory. She, like Carmona and Dalle, was also a vital piece to the mold of the Lady Lakers successful 2011 season. In 2011, she was rated statistically as the nation's 4th best goalie.

Overall, Finger Lakes notched the opener thanks in large part to a team-wide effort that it received out of its vets and new additions.

The Lady Lakers will play their next game this coming Saturday (9/1) at Hudson Valley CC. That game is scheduled to start at noon.
