Women’s Soccer – FLCC Falls to Mohawk Valley in Region III Finals, 2-1

DRYDEN, NY. – In a rematch of 2011's region III championship final, the Lady Lakers took on Mohawk Valley CC for the second straight year in the 2012 region III-B finals over the weekend.

On an overcast day in Dryden yesterday, #3 nationally ranked Finger Lakes failed to take down a potent team in the Lady Hawks (ranked fourth nationally) for that second consecutive regional title – as it fell by a score of 2-1. Mohawk, who entered the game with its only loss of 2012 coming against the Lady Lakers, came into the contest seeking revenge for its failure to capture the 2011 regional crown.

The game, which was held at Tompkins Cortland CC, consisted of two teams carrying some of the nation's top records. The Lady Lakers came in with an 18-1-1 record while the Lady Hawks entered play 19-1-1.

On the winning end of the contest, Mohawk received one goal each out of Brooke Pominville and Samantha Getman. Adding one assist each for the Lady Hawks on offense were Meghan Carlo and Mia DeGironimo.

In goal, Mohawk's keeper Vanessa Jecko turned in 10 saves in 90 minutes worth of action.

Discovering the net for FLCC's lone marker was freshman defender Rachel Hefner. Assisting her goal was Jessa Blondell.

In a losing effort in between the crossbars, Lady Lakers keeper Kristy Kirkpatrick came up with 10 saves in the 90-minute meeting.

Overall, the Lady Hawks edged FLCC in the shooting department by just one shot. The shots on goals read 12 for Mohawk and 11 for the Lady Lakers.

With the victory, Mohawk advances on to play in the 2012 nationals, which are scheduled to begin next Thursday (11/8). The Hawks will enter national postseason play with a record of 20-1-1.

The loss ended the Lady Lakers 2012 season. They finished it with an 18-2-1 record. Despite coming up short in the regional finals, FLCC turned in a solid year behind great coaching and great team play. A full season in review on this year's squad will be available tomorrow on the FLCC women's soccer home page on flccathletics.com.
