Lakers to Host Finger Lakes Classic
CANANDAIUGA -- Finger Lakes Community College will host the Finger Lakes Classic Men's Soccer Tournament this weekend at the Finger Lakes CC campus in Canandaiuga, NY. The Classic will feature the host Lakers, as well as Mercyhurst North East, Jamestown CC, and Mohawk Valley CC.
The Lakers enter the weekend after dropping their opener to Broome CC on Wednesday. It was a closely played, 1-0 defeat for Finger Lakes that was the first collegiate action for numerous freshmen. Goalkeepers Barizaa Worwor and Brian Arcara combined to stop 11 Hornets shots in their first collegiate action.
Finger Lakes will face Jamestown Community College on Saturday. The Jayhawks enter the Classic with a 1-0-0 record, beating fellow tournament participant Mohawk Valley by the score of 2-0 on August 24. Sophomores Gage Bird and Evan Ahlstrom found the back of the net for Jamestown. Tyler Dykstra earned the clean sheet stopping all 5 Mohawk Valley shots.
Mohawk Valley enters the Finger Lakes Classic with the most experience under their belt in the young season. They currently hold a 1-2-0 record defeating Niagara County CC, while losing to Onondaga CC as well as Jamestown. Jacob Pohl scored the lone goal for the Hawks.
The final team in the Finger Lakes Classic are the Saints from Mercyhurst North East. They enter the weekend, like Jamestown, with a 1-0-0 record. The Saints bested Lakeland CC on August 28 by the score of 2-1. Abraham Talbot netted the winner in the 106th minute of the contest.
On Saturday, Mercyhurst NE will face Mohawk Valley at 1pm to kick off the tournament. Finger Lakes takes on Jamestown following that match. Sunday will see Mohawk Valley and Jamestown in the early match at 1pm, followed by the Saints and Lakers.
