CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader in their home opener versus Corning Community College on Wednesday evening.
Several Lakers finished with at least one RBI in game one, including Lauren Pilon (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall), who had two and brought in the initial one on a fielder's choice in the first inning and the other on a triple later in the contest. Gia Bills (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) also finished with two RBIs on a triple to right field that brought home Emma Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Pilon to cap off an eight-run second inning for the Lakers. Power-hitter Brazen Beckwith, who headlined the fourth inning on a 2 RBI triple, ended with a filled stat sheet as she had five hits, three runs, and two key RBIs. The Lakers were up 13-8 after four innings and the odds seemed to be in their favor, but unfortunate defensive errors slowed their tempo down and allowed the Barons to make a comeback and ultimately pull away with a 15-13 victory. Madison Anderson (Ashville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) held her own over seven innings on the mound as she faced 46 batters and dealt 97 strikes. Lauren Pilon, Emma Johnson, Cameron Crawford (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne), and Ella Upchurch (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) were all able to catch the opposition off guard, with one stolen base apiece.
The Lakers struggled to keep up with the Barons in game two, falling 11-3 after just five innings. Emma Johnson scored on a sac fly from Cameron Crawford in the second, and after a flurry of runs from the Barons over the next several innings, Anna Kurtzhalts (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) brought home Devon Dean (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes) and Jenna Keller (Gainesville, N.Y./Letchworth) on an RBI double in the fifth to give the Lakers what would be their final run of the game. Crawford was rolled out to the mound for four innings and had a solid outing with 45 strikes and two strikeouts. Anna Kurtzhalts used her quickness to an advantage with one stolen base.
The Lakers remain home for their next matchup, as they look to rebound against the Lazers of Onondaga Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29th at 12 & 2:30 PM.
