CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Thursday, losing both games of their doubleheader against Monroe Community College.
The 1st game saw unfortunate miscues from the Lakers, which ultimately contributed to a 16-0 defeat. Emma Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) accounted for the team's lone hit of the game with a single to right field in the 4th inning, while pitcher Cameron Crawford (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne) faced a tough slew of hitters yet still dealt out 71 strikes over 5 innings in the loss.
In the 2nd game, Devon Dean (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes) fired up the offensive engine with a 2 RBI single in the top of the first inning, followed by 3 more scores – another by Dean, one from Ella Upchurch (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and the next from Madison Anderson (Ashville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) in the top of the 3rd to give the Lakers a sizable 5-1 lead. The score would remain that way until the latter half of the contest, when the Tribunes gained life in the sixth and poured on 4 runs to tie it up, 5-5, followed by an inside-the-park home run from Nikki Namisniak in the final frame to cap off a heartbreaking loss for the Lakers, 6-5. Madison Anderson earned the start and dealt 63 strikes and 2 strikeouts over 6 innings.
The Lakers (8-14, 1-3) will look to bounce back when they travel to Queensbury, N.Y. on Saturday, April 26th to take on SUNY Adirondack (4-19, 1-5) in a doubleheader set for 1 & 3 PM.
