Maggio's Hat Trick Leads Lakers
CANANDAIGUA -- Freshman Brittany Maggio scored three goals in the first half to lead the Lakers to a 3-2 victory over Hudson Valley CC on Wednesday at Finger Lakes Community College. The Lakers evened their season record to 2-2-0.
Finger Lakes started off with the pressure early against the Vikings. Amonie DiRoma sent Valios Feneziani on a long ball as the Lakers controlled the ball early. Hudson Valley would conceded a corner to alleviate the pressure. McKenzie Miller took the corner and the ball was headed towards net, hit the crossbar, and went straight down without crossing the goal line. The Lakers would continue the pressure in the 5th minute and break through for the goal. Feneziani would shoot from the left side and ring the ball right off the post. Leading scorer Brittany Maggio was there to deposit the rebound in the net for an early 1-0 lead.
Finger Lakes would strike again a minute later. Amonie DiRoma would once again start the pressure from the midfield as she would send a through ball that found Maggio unmarked. Hudson Valley's keeper charged, and as she came out, Maggio ripped it to the upper right corner for the goal. Hudson would not let the game get away however. In the 16th minute, Alex VanAuken would possess the ball to the left of the Lakers net. She would find Morgan Bailey in the middle and Bailey would swing it around to Tiara Kruzinski on the right side. Kruzinski would put one high on the short side. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced straight down, just like what happened to the Lakers earlier. However this time the ball would cross the line to make the score 2-1.
Maggio would complete the hat trick in the 30th minute as she was on the receiving end of a midfield pass from Feneziani. She would break in on net, cut left to avoid the goalie and score to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead at halftime. Finger Lakes outshot Hudson Valley 19-9 in the opening frame and controlled most the possession.
The script would be flipped in the second half however. Hudson Valley would make it a one goal game with a goal by Alex VanAuken in the 67th minute. The Vikings would continue the pressure and best opportunity to level the game came in the 80th minute. VanAuken found herself open at the top of the Finger Lakes box. She would rip a shot toward the lower left corner, but Danielle Ogrodowski would dive and make the save. She recorded 9 saves in total, 7 in the second half to preserve the Lakers victory.
Finger Lakes will return to action this weekend with a roadtrip to the North Country of New York State. They Take on North Country CC on Saturday at 1pm, and take on Clinton CC on Sunday at 12pm.
