ALFRED, NY. - The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers (16-24) finished off a weekend sweep of the Alfred State College Pioneers (6-31) by taking them down in an afternoon road doubleheader today. They took game one, 15-10 (in nine innings) and two, 16-3. The Lakers previously swept a home doubleheader with the Pioneers on Saturday (4/28), 4-2 (game one) and 10-4 (game two).
Game One Summary and Recap: The Lakers bats were a hot commodity as they delivered a total of nineteen hits. Finger Lakes also managed to achieve solid run production out of its lineup. Four Lakers players drove in two or more runs. Finger Lakes also displayed a great deal of speed on the base paths by swiping a total of sixteen bases.
Tied 10-10 in extra innings, Anthony Gonzalez (Rochester, NY) singled home David Bradshaw (Canandaigua, NY) in the top of the ninth to give the Lakers the lead. Eddie Tagliareni (Mexico, NY) and Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY) provided Finger Lakes with added insurance runs in the ninth by registering back-to-back triples.
Relief pitcher Billy Kosachook (Ontario, NY) earned the win on the mound for Finger Lakes by throwing two strong innings out of the bullpen.
Game One Individual Highlights: Gonzalez led the Lakers in hits (4) and steals (4). He also produced one RBI and scored three runs.
Mitaynes, Cowen, and Stowell each added two RBI's apiece with their sticks. Stowell followed Gonzalez in the steal department by registering three thefts.
Dominick Beniamino (Geneva, NY) added both a pair of hits and runs scored as well as three stolen bases for the Lakers.
Kosachook posted two strikeouts on one walk and three hits, allowing just one earned run. The victory was Kosachook's third on the season. He is now 3-3 in 2012.
Game Two Summary and Recap: The Lakers bats were again a success on the diamond. Finger Lakes totaled twenty-one hits. The Lakers also displayed strong pitching efforts behind starter Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY). Stackhouse earned the victory in what was the first start of his collegiate career. He and teammate Conor Bascom (Pittsford, NY) combined for seven strong innings worth of work.
Game Two Individual Highlights: Branden Rhodes (Victor, NY) led Finger Lakes in hitting with his four-hit display. He finished the game 4 for 5 from the plate with four RBI's.
Cowen, Tagliareni, and Dylan Catlin (Brewerton, NY) each had three hits apiece for the Lakers. Cowen, like Rhodes, also produced four RBI's with his bat.
Corey Galletta (Oswego, NY) and Gonzalez each registered two hits apiece.
Tagliareni and Gonzalez each added three runs scored apiece to go along with their productive hitting efforts.
Stackhouse launched five innings on the hill, accumulating two strikeouts and no walks on eight hits. He allowed just three earned runs.
Bascom added two innings worth of relief on the hill, finishing the game with one strikeout and no walks. He didn't allow a hit or run in his stint.
Upcoming Games: Finger Lakes will play its last set of regular season home games for 2012 on Tuesday (5/1) when they take on conference foes Corning Community College (8-22) in an afternoon doubleheader. The Lakers swept a road doubleheader with Corning earlier this month on 4/7, 13-3 (game one) and 20-17 (game two). The first pitch of game one is scheduled to be thrown at 2:00 pm.
