Abigail Miller in the Sophomore Spotlight

Abigail Miller in the Sophomore Spotlight

Sophomore Abigail Miller has been featured in September’s sophomore spotlight.  Miller is a current member of the women’s soccer team, majoring in Liberal Arts and Science at Finger Lakes Community College.   She was nominated for the spotlight by her coach Pat King.  To be eligible for the spotlight sophomore student-athletes should demonstrate the values of leadership, integrity, character, and teamwork in their everyday lives.

Miller decided to pursue a degree at Finger Lakes Community College because of the close-knit community.  “I really like the college,” said Miller. “It has a very comfortable number of students with a good community behind it, one that really appreciates athletics.”

As a student-athlete at Finger Lakes, Miller has learned how to prioritize her time to be a good athlete and a great student.  She now has higher expectations of herself moving forward.

One of Miller’s proudest memories during her time at Finger Lakes was looking at how much the women’s soccer team has grown.  “I’m so proud of our team, we have improved so much since last year,” said Miller. “We have a strong sense of team chemistry which makes things great to be a part of.”

In addition to her contributions to the women’s soccer team, Miller is also involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Board at FLCC, acting as a liaison between her team and the administration within the athletic department.

"It's very easy for someone outside of the program to see the talent of a great player.  You can look at a player like Abby and say "wow, what a great goalkeeper" or see that she's #2 in the entire country for save percentage.  But what makes Abby an easy nomination is really everything else,” said head coach Pat King.  “People don't see her showing up to practice 15-20 minutes early to get equipment ready, or keeping the team mentally focused on game day.  She is not only an incredibly hard worker, but a leader and a mentor to every young player that we have.  The truth is that Abby’s value to our team could never be determined by the number of shutouts she has or the number of saves she makes.  What she gives our team on a daily basis is so much more than that.”

Miller intends on graduating from Finger Lakes CC in December.  Moving forward, she looks to finish her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, while continuing her soccer career.  Additionally, Miller enjoys working with animals and wishes to work in an animal shelter.
