Krystal Hunter in the Sophomore Spotlight

Krystal Hunter in the Sophomore Spotlight

Sophomore Krystal Hunter has been highlighted in January’s edition of the Lakers sophomore spotlight. Krystal is currently a member of the women’s basketball team, majoring in Liberal Arts at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC).

Krystal’s coach, Kelly Broderick, nominated her for this month’s spotlight, which highlights exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate the values of good character, integrity, leadership, and teamwork in all aspect of their lives.

“Krystal is a very talented athlete,” says Coach Broderick.  “This season she is averaging 14.6 points per game for us along with 5.6 rebounds per game.  She has finished more than one game this season with a double-double as well.”

She choose to attend Finger Lakes Community College because she was recruited by the former women’s basketball coach, Gabe Coffey. Another reason why Krystal chose Finger Lakes, is because of its proximity to Rochester, which she calls home.

“What I like most about FLCC are the professors, they readily offer help, and it is easy to fit in here.”

Krystal enjoys being a student-athlete. “It can be a good stress reliever from student work,” said Krystal. “I have good teammates, and being a student-athlete helps me balance a busy schedule.”

When asked about the expectation of being a student-athlete, Krystal mentioned, “We are expected to succeed and participate in class and be there for our teammates.” Her additional roles at FLCC have allowed her to learn many important life lessons.

Krystal stated, “Being a student-athlete at FLCC has taught me not to procrastinate and to manage my time more efficiently.” She admitted it is difficult not to procrastinate sometimes, but it has been a good learning opportunity.

When asked what her proudest achievement was at FLCC, Krystal responded, “I set a goal to achieve a 3.5 or higher, and I earned a 3.6.” Krystal emphasized that being a student-athlete pays off in the long run.

“Krystal has drastically improved for us since the beginning of the season in regards to making herself better and her teammates,” says Broderick. “She has received MSAC Player of the Week for her performances in our win over Broome (18pts, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals) and in our overtime win over Jefferson (21pts and 10 rebounds).  She does very well in the classroom as well where she has a 3.6 gpa.  Krystal plans to transfer to a four year school next year where she plans to continue her basketball career.”

Upon graduating the spring of 2017 Krystal has already planned to make her next moves. She has hopes of transferring to either Morrisville, Buffalo State, or Daemon to peruse a degree in athletic training. After completion of her Bachelor’s degree, Krystal looks to become a trainer and a basketball coach.

After Krystal’s departure from FLCC, she would imagine her legacy to be remembered by her big smile, always having a positive mindset, working hard for herself, and her team. Krystal would also like to leave her legacy behind by breaking the single game three point record, where she is currently a co-leader with eight three pointers in one game.
