Megan Howell in the Sophomore Spotlight
Sophomore Megan Howell has been highlighted in November’s edition of the Lakers sophomore spotlight. Howell is a current member of the women’s basketball team, majoring in Physical Education and Health & Science at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC).
Howell’s coach, Kelly Broderick, nominated her for this month’s spotlight, which highlights exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate the values of good character, integrity, leadership, and teamwork in all aspect of their lives.
She chose to attend Finger Lakes Community College because it was close to home and because FLCC had a solid athletic program that focuses on the well-being of its student-athletes.
“What I like most about Finger Lakes is how nice the faculty and staff are,” said Megan. “It is very easy to form close, positive relationships with everyone you meet.”
Through her time as a student-athlete, Howell has learned the importance of building close bonds with those around her. She has also learned how to better manage her time between her studies, athletics, and her social life.
“I am a firm believer of the student-athlete,” said Howell. “To me the student part always comes first, while the athlete part allows me to be a member of a team and become a good leader.”
In addition to her contributions on the women’s basketball team, Howell is also involved in the college’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) and serves as a liaison between her team and the athletics administration.
“Megan is an outstanding athlete an exceptional young lady. She always has everyone else’s best interests in mind and she puts the team’s needs ahead of her own,” said head coach Kelly Broderick. “Megan is a very good student and is a huge asset to our team, both as a player and as a leader.”
As Howell reflects on her time at FLCC, she is most proud of the fact that she discovered a career path to pursue. As a freshman, Howell was unsure of her career goals and began her FLCC career as a Liberal Arts major. However, after her first year, she realized she wanted to pursue a career in Physical Education.
Upon her graduation from FLCC in the spring of 2017, Howell hopes to transfer to a four year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She aspires to be a PE teacher and a basketball coach.
When asked what she would like her legacy to be when she left Finger Lakes, Howell Stated, “I would like to be remembered as the one who always loved being a part of the team and someone who enjoyed the challenges that college and athletics brought to her life.”
