Jonathan Range in the Sophomore Spotlight

Jonathan Range in the Sophomore Spotlight

Sophomore Jonathan Range has been highlighted in January’s edition of the Lakers sophomore spotlight. Range is currently a member of the men’s basketball team, majoring in communications at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC).

Range’s coach, Richard Jones, nominated him for this month’s spotlight, which highlights exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate the values of good character, integrity, leadership, and teamwork in all aspects of their lives.

"Jonathan is one of the most talented players I have ever coached,” said Jones, in his 16th season leading the program. “He can play anywhere on the court with success, is very coachable, and is an excellent teammate.”

Range chose to attend FLCC after receiving advice from his brother’s head coach, who happens to be an FLCC alumnus. The coach praised FLCC for both its strong academic reputation and the valuable programming available to students.

“What I like most about FLCC is that everyone is nice to one another. I enjoy talking with people I do not know and learning about them,” said Range.

During his time at FLCC, Range said he has thoroughly enjoyed the student-athlete experience. “I enjoy being held accountable as a student and an athlete, and working really hard to be the best I can be at both,” said Range. “I had the chance to go to other schools, but if I had to do it all over again I wouldn’t change a thing. I am so happy I chose FLCC.”

Being a student-athlete can be a tricky balancing act, juggling work in the classroom and on the court. Range said he has noticed higher expectations are placed on FLCC student-athletes, and that he accepts the added responsibility of being a leader on the court and in the classroom.

“You have to do more than the average person, set an example, and be a leader in different settings,” said Range, who has learned consistency is an important trait for student-athletes.

“I have to give my best effort in sports and in academics.”

Besides being dedicated to athletics, Range attends student life events such as movie night and other friendly gatherings that help keep FLCC’s students connected. Through these interactions on campus, Range expressed pride in how much he has grown when it comes to trusting and opening up to others. He has truly embraced the concept of the FLCC family.

Upon graduating in May, Range plans to transfer to a four-year college, potentially West Virginia Tech., or Georgetown College to continue his career in communications or business. Range said he would like to give speeches about his basketball career one day, or commentate for professional sports after he has completed his Bachelor’s degree.
