Finger Lakes Community College Spring Season Suspended
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The NJCAA Region III Athletic Directors have voted in support of suspending the spring season until March 30 due to the COVID-19 situation. Region III has issued the following statement:
As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation as it impacts our member colleges, the NJCAA has made the decision to suspend all spring competition through Friday, April 3rd. Along with the postponement of Basketball Championships until April 20th.
The NJCAA is also extending the hardship season completion ruling to 60%- should teams cancel their season before the limit is reached. Student-Athletes will not be charged a year of eligibility, for the 2020-21 season. The NJCAA is also looking at increasing its allowable number of Letter of Intent which will be vetted by the Eligibility Committee. Our goal is to look after the safety and security of all involved, while also sitll providing a pathway to allow opportunities for our student-athletes and the ability to compete for a national championship.
The NJCAA will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.
The NJCAA has not made any directives to cancel spring championships, like the NCAA. Directors of the Region mentioned that as far as they know the NJCAA is leaving it up to Regions and institutions to decide how they would like to carry out the spring season. This may, and in all likelihood will change, but for now, this is the Region’s decision.
Therefore, for now, Region III is following the above response. At FLCC this applies to all NJCAA spring sports, eSports, and Logging. Spring athletes can still practice and we will all be in communication. We will know more as the days unfold.
