Myrtle Beach, SC. - The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion, finishing their eight-game trip to Myrtle Beach with a strong 7–1 record. This marks the best start for the Lakers to open a season since the 2022–23 campaign, when the team began the year with a 6–2 record.
The Lakers have begun the season on a historically strong pace at the plate. Through the first eight games, the team is batting a collective .360 while launching 11 home runs to start the year. That total leads the region by more than double the next closest team. Finger Lakes has also posted an impressive .620 slugging percentage through the opening stretch of the season, which currently ranks first in the region.
Offensively, the Lakers are lead by sophomore infielder Markus Brehm (Wayland, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) who has been red-hot at the plate to start the season. Brehm is 15-for-25, good for an astonishing .600 batting average through the first eight games. He has also produced six extra-base hits, including two home runs, while using his speed to swipe six bases early in the year. Defensively, he has shown impressive versatility as well, manning both center field and shortstop to start the season.
Freshman infielder Nick Prezioso (Pendleton, N.Y. / Starpoint) has also enjoyed a tremendous start to the season, going 13-for-26 at the plate for an impressive .500 batting average. Prezioso has driven in six runs while also providing steady defense at shortstop.
Sophomore center fielder Brennen Russo (East Irondequoit, N.Y. / Eastridge) has been a major power threat early this spring. Russo currently leads the region in home runs with four and ranks second in RBIs with 15. His strong offensive production has helped him post an outstanding 1.500 OPS to begin the year.
Freshman Zach Huber (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) has also made an immediate impact in the lineup, starting his collegiate career 12-for-23, good for a .522 batting average. He has added five extra-base hits, including two home runs.
Sophomore Ty Joy (Warsaw, N.Y. / Warsaw) and Freshman Nate Brinza (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) have split time and both gotten off to strong starts at the plate. Joy is hitting an impressive .476 with four extra-base hits, while Brinza is batting .400 with five RBIs on the season. Both players have also connected for one home run each.
On the pitching side of the ball the Lakers were led by Nate Power (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) who made two starts during the trip down south. Power threw 10 innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs while consistently keeping opposing hitters off balance. Freshman Evan Bishop (East Irondequoit, N.Y. / Eastridge) also turned in a strong performance on the mound, pitching seven innings while allowing eight hits and striking out eight batters.
