Lakers Battle to Series Split vs. Herkimer In The Home Opener

Canandaigua, N.Y. - On a cold and windy day at the turf, the Finger Lakes Community College Lakers and Herkimer College Generals battled through the elements and ultimately split a doubleheader. The Lakers edged out a narrow 5–4 victory in game one behind timely hitting and strong pitching, while the Generals bounced back in the second game to claim an 11–1 win and earn the split.

Game one saw reigning Region III Player of the Week Markus Brehm (Wayland, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) continue his strong start to the season for the Lakers. Brehm went 2-for-3 at the plate and delivered the biggest swing of the game, blasting a go-ahead, and eventual game-winning home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Lakers the edge.  Zach Huber (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) also stayed hot offensively, collecting two hits and an RBI to help lead the Lakers at the plate.

On the mound in game one we saw sophomore Nate Power (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) start for FLCC, pitching three innings while allowing four hits and four runs. The Lakers bullpen stepped up in a big way, highlighted by a dominant relief outing from Alexander Rogers (Waterloo, N.Y. / Waterloo). Rogers threw 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three, earning the win.

Drew Wilson (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport High School) entered to face the final batter of the game and delivered a strikeout to secure the save, sealing the 5–4 victory for the Lakers.

Game two was led by freshman Nate Brinza (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) who hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to score the only run for the Lakers.  Alex Green (Wellsville, N.Y. / Wellsville Secondary School) would enjoy a nice game collecting 2 hits.

The Finger Lakes Lakers will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to face Jamestown Community College for a two-game set. The teams will then shift to Canandaigua on Sunday, where the Lakers will host Jamestown for another doubleheader.

First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 PM.
