CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's volleyball team resumed action for the second and last day of the FLCC Invite, as they took on Nassau Community College, Monroe University - Bronx and Roxbury Community College. The Lakers went 2-1 the previous day, but upped their play to go undefeated on Sunday.
The Lakers kicked things off with a revenge win over Nassau, who reverse-swept them in 5 sets on Saturday. Evan Lukasiewicz (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led the offensive attack with a team-high 10 kills, and was also effective on defense and from the service line with 4 digs and 3 aces. Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Chittenago) contributed his selfless play as he dished out 26 assists along with 5 digs. Both Dominick Alvarado (York, P.A./Northeastern) and Jack Donovan (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) had efficient outings with 6 kills apiece, while Bryce Nickson (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) contributed greatly on the defensive end with a team-high 9 digs.
The Lakers earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Monroe in their second match of the day. Evan Lukasiewicz and Aaron Hennessy (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) anchored the offensive charge with 9 and 8 kills respectively and averaged a combined hitting percentage of .426, while Cole Thomas led the offense with 26 assists and 5 service aces. Grant Walker (Boston, N.Y./Eden) put up a team-high 10 digs, while both Dominick Alvarado (York, P.A./Northeastern) and Braden Whitcomb (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) put on efficient performances with 8 and 6 kills respectively.
The Lakers capped the weekend off strongly as they picked up a 3-1 victory over Roxbury in their final match. The offensive attack was distributed evenly, as four Lakers ended with 9 or more kills. Aaron Hennessy led the way with 11 while Dominick Alvarado, Evan Lukasiewicz and Jack Donovan combined for 28 on an average hitting percentage of .419. Cole Thomas played a significant role in the victory as he dished out 40 assists, while also being 1 of 3 players to finish with 8 digs – the other two being Grant Walker and Bryce Nickson.
Thanks to coherence on offense and defense, strong leadership from sophomores, and effective communication in each match, the Lakers were able to emerge victorious in 5 out of the 6 games played this weekend. They sit at 9-6 on the season, and are in for a well deserved break with their next matches taking place on Saturday, March 1st in a tripleheader. These 3 scrimmages against UB Club, SU Club and RIT Club will be their last home outings until the weekend of April 4th, when they host the NJCAA men's national volleyball invitational.
